Led by Bates, Nelson Aberdeen boys place fourth at district meet

Bates wins discus, shot put titles; Nelson takes 400 at 2A District 4 Championships

Aberdeen’s boys track and field team placed fourth overall at the 2A District 4 Track & Field Championship meet on Friday at Columbia River High School.

The Bobcats scored 68 points, led by thrower Tyler Bates and runner Henry Nelson.

Bates continued his season-long dominance in both the shot put and discus. The talented junior won his first district-shot put title with a throw of 53 feet, a personal best. The defending 2A state champion in the discus uncorked a throw of 160-4 to win his second-consecutive district title.

Nelson, a sophomore that won a district championship in the 800 last season, won his second district title in two events when he crossed the line first in the 400 with a time of 52.02.

Other Bobcats qualifying for the state meet were senior Luke Niemi (100, 11.34 PR, 6th); senior Will Boling (1600, 4:26.38, 4th); junior JaBron Brooks (shot put, 50-6.25 PR, 3rd); the 4×100 relay team of Micah Schroeder, Jeremy Sawyer, Brandon Newcomb and Niemi (44.55, 4th); and the 4×400 realy team of Isaac Garcia, Niemi, Boling and Nelson (3:31.52, 2nd).

In the girls competition, junior Solveig Kvarsvik qualified for the state meet in the 400 with a fourth-place time of 1:01.36.

The 2A State Championship Meet is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
