Hoquiam’s Tole among winners at Grays Harbor Fair races

Hoquiam’s Jason Tole takes Iron Man event at Grays Harbor Fair races

ELMA — Biding his time early, Hoquiam’s Jason Tole made a late run to take the checkered flag in the Iron Man Challenge portion of the Grays Harbor Fair races on Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway.

Shane Kerrigan of Aberdeen took the first 25-lap feature race in the Street Stocks classification. Matthew Drager of Albany, Ore., won the Modified main event. The Outlaw Tuners main event was rained out.

A large crowd attended Saturday’s races, an annual feature of the Grays Harbor County Fair.

Appropriately for the fair races, the top five finishers in the Iron Man Challenge hailed from Grays Harbor County.

The winner of the first feature, Kerrigan set the pace for the early portion of the Iron Man. He was still in front following a late-race caution, with Scott Fritts of Montesano and Tole in pursuit.

Tole looked to the inside and passed Fritts for second on turn two, using lapped traffic to his advantage. The Hoquiam driver then raced side-by-side with Kerrigan for several laps before taking a permanent lead with a few laps remaining. Kerrigan and Fritts took second and third, respectively.

Timing his restarts perfectly, Kerrigan led virtually all the way in the first feature. Jack Parshall of Hoquiam was his primary challenger for the bulk of the race, but Tole eventually slipped into second place and Fritts third.

Modifieds

Leading from the outset, Drager withstood some late challenges for the victory.

Running on the high side of the raceway, the Oregon driver was slowly pulling away from the field when a mid-race caution enabled Doug Davenport of Vernonia, Ore., and Lane Zerbin of Campbell River, B.C., to make their moves.

Taking over second place, Zerbin looked to the inside a few times but was unable to make the pass for the lead. Drager sliced his way through lapped traffic to pick up the victor5y.

Zerbin settled for second, with Davenport placing third.

The annual appearance of the Rolling Thunder Big Rigs semi-trucks will highlight Saturday’s program at the raceway. Racing is also scheduled in the Street Stocks and Outlaw Tuners.

The gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with racing scheduled for 7 p.m.
