GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Raymond-South Bend 51, Hoquiam 34

Raymond-South Bend snapped Hoquiam’s five-game winning streak with a 51-34 victory on Wednesday at Raymond High School.

The Ravens (11-5 overall) held a 28-24 lead over the Grizzlies (10-6) at the half and took advantage of a cold-shooting Hoquiam offensive in the third quarter, outscoring the Grizzlies 14-4 in the frame.

Hoquiam’s offensive woes continued in the fourth quarter, managing six points to finish with 10 for the entire second half.

“Today was a great lesson for us in real time that if we do not match the energy of our opponents as a team that bad things will happen. Hats off to RSB as they outworked us tonight as a team,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “The second thing we learned is the team that puts more time in on their skills will have an advantage. All that extra work of shooting and ball-handling outside of practice was evident by the Ravens. Solid, upper-class basketball team.”

In a game featuring plenty of local standouts, Ravens senior forward Kassie Koski led all scorers with 18 points – 16 of those in the first half – to go along with five rebounds, four steals and an assist.

Senior guard Emma Glazlier added 10 points, three rebounds and five steals while senior guard Megan Kongbouakhay (4 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 5 steals), senior Ava Pine (8 pts., 4 stl., 3 reb., 2 ast.) and senior post Ava Baugher (7 pts., 4 reb., 4 ast., stl.) also contributed to the victory.

RSB head 17 turnovers as a team, a statistic Ravens head coach Jason Koski was not pleased with.

“Once we started pulling away in the second half, we would give momentum right back to them by turning the ball over,” he said. “At some point we have to value the ball way more than we have been.”

Sophomore forward Aaliyah Kennedy led Hoquiam with a 14 point, 11 rebound double-double to go along with six steals while seniors Lexi LaBounty (9 pts., 6 ast.) and Sydney Gordon (8 pts.) scored at least eight points apiece for the Grizzlies.

“We also had some bright moments and stretches where we did some really good things, just not enough of them,” said Allan, whose team committed 26 turnovers and shot 14 of 40 from the field (35%). “No excuses made. We got beat today by a better team.”

RSB hosts Forks in a 2B Pacific League game at 6 p.m. on Friday in Raymond.

Hoquiam hosts Kalama in a non-league game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Hoquiam 7 17 4 6 – 34

RSB 14 14 14 9 – 51

Oakville 47, Ocosta 38

Ocosta saw the game get away from it in the second half of a 47-38 loss to Oakville on Wednesday at Ocosta High School.

The Wildcats (6-8) trailed 20-19 at halftime before the Acorns (7-7) pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Ocosta 21-7 thanks to Ui’lani Siufanua and Riyah Filitaula with 11 and eight points in the frame, respectively.

“We defended, we competed and we put ourselves in position,” Ocosta head coach Hunter Hatton said. “The third quarter was the difference. If we handle that stretch better, it’s a different ballgame.”

Junior Peyten Morris and sophomore Bristol Towle scored in double digits for Ocosta with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
