Gardner wins second straight MVP award as Raymond takes top Pacific League honors

Seagulls head coach Jason Koski named league’s co-Coach of the Year

To the victor go the spoils.

After claiming the Pacific League championship, the Raymond Seagulls took home some top awards as league officials announced her All-League girls basketball team for the 2021 season.

After a spectacular junior season, Raymond guard Kyra Gardner was named the league’s co-MVP along with Ilwaco’s Erika Glenn.

Gardner averaged 23 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.1 steals and 4.8 assists per game to win her second consecutive league MVP honor.

“As I think all who follow sports, primarily high school girls basketball, know how special of a player Kyra really is,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said of Gardner, who was a first team all-state guard last season. “Since she was a little kid she has prepared herself basketball-wise to get to the level she is at. Natural athleticism helps, don’t get me wrong. She just genuinely has a highly committed competitive desire to excel at the game, which she does.”

Gardner scored 38 points in a season-opening thrashing of Ocosta and 34 in a triple-double performance against Forks on May 11. She was one steal away from recording three triple doubles in 12 games this season.

“As a coach at our level, she is a once in a career type of player to be around,” Koski said. “We have had other good players and MVPs, but she is truly the most skilled we have had so it has been a blessing to have her be in our program.”

Koski was honored as the league’s co-Coach of the Year with Ilwaco’s Ned Bittner. Koski guided the Seagulls to the league championship with a 10-1 league mark.

“I am honored that the coaches in our league have shown respect to myself and Coach Bittner as co-Coach of the Year,” Koski said. “Knowing Ned for many years he would probably say the same thing. As a coach, your results are only as good as the process your players are willing to work at. If they aren’t willing to do the work, hopefully more so in the offseason, it doesn’t matter how much the coach knows because they won’t have the skills to execute any plan.

“I tell our team each season that any postseason awards are actually team awards, because we all sacrifice something for others to shine. That is what being a part of a team has to do to be successful.”

In addition to Gardner, Raymond had one other player named to the league’s first team. After emerging as a consistent secondary scorer for the Seagulls this season, Raymond’s Karsyn Freeman was named to the league’s top squad as an eighth grader.
