Hoquiam downed by King’s Way Christian; Elma falls to La Center

Both the Hoquiam Grizzlies and Elma Eagles suffered losses in their opening-round games of the 1A District 4 Tournament on Friday.

King’s Way Chr. 76, Hoquiam 25

King’s Way Christian shot a blistering 57% en route to handing Hoquiam a 76-25 loss in a 1A District 4 opening-round game Friday in Vancouver.

KWC (18-4 overall) hit on 28-of-49 shots as a team, including 8-for-18 from 3-point range and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line.

The Knights also spread the wealth against Hoquiam (8-13), with four players scoring in double figures, led by Sam Kelly’s 13 points, and nine of the 12 players on the Knights roster getting on the scoreboard.

“They shot lights out and are an extremely good shooting team,” Hoquiam head coach Curtis Eccles said. “Even their bench shot well. … Everybody was shooting well.”

Cameron Bumstead was the only Grizzlies player to score in double figures, totalling 14 points for a Hoquiam team that fell behind 21-10 after one quarter and 43-16 by halftime.

Hoquiam will play an elimination game in the consolation round against Forks at 6 p.m. on Monday at Montesano High School.

La Center 66, Elma 52

Elma lost a 1A District 4 Tournament first-round game 66-52 to La Center on Friday at La Center High School.

Elma (10-11) held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but La Center (15-6) outscored the Eagles by 12 in the second quarter to take a 35-24 lead into halftime.

Elma was led by Sawyer Witt and Nick Church scored 11 points each while Canon Seaberg added 10 points for the Eagles.

Elma hit 18-for-48 shots from the field as a team (38%).

The Eagles will face Montesano in an elimination game at 7:30 tonight Montesano High School.
