Friday Prep Roundup: Aberdeen girls notch first win in bowling

GIRLS BOWLING

Bobcats split home debut

At Rainier Lanes, Aberdeen got its first taste of home cooking against Tumwater and Black Hills and came away with a split in the inaugural AHS Battle of the Pins on Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats came away with their first-ever dual meet victory by rolling past the T-Birds, 4-1. Aberdeen came within two pins of a dual meet sweep against Tumwater.

Against the Wolves, the Bobcats grabbed a win in the first Baker game before falling, 4-1.

“It shows that it takes time and work, that practice does pay off and the girls are figuring it out,” AHS assistant coach Andy Duffy said. “We had personal-best scores today and a lot of increased pins. We’re having a lot of fun right now.”

Duffy noted that Meghan Howell, Annabelle Micheau and Kaitlyn Martin all had personal-best days on Friday. Howell had the Bobcats’ best game at 148 and two-game series at 255, with Anna Arquette close behind with a 254 series.

ROCHESTER — Reagan Glanz and Dani Buckman combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter as Aberdeen rallied past Rochester in an Evergreen 2A Conference game Friday at Rochester.

The Bobcats (1-1, 5-4) trailed 31-30 entering the fourth quarter. Glanz, however, scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the final stanza, while Buckman tallied half of her 12 points in the last eight minutes.

Aberdeen took the lead early in the fourth quarter and was up by as many as eight points. The Cats survived three players fouling out in the whistle-filled affair.

“Up until the third quarter, we had great looks but we couldn’t make (the shots),” Bobcat coach Jeff Niemi said. “In the third quarter, we made a couple and it rolled over into the fourth. And our foul shooting was pretty solid down the stretch.”

Jillian Swor, one of those who fouled out, amassed 11 rebounds and three steals before departing. Kyra Gallinger also had three steals.

Aberdeen visits Elma as part of a co-ed doubleheader on Monday.

TAHOLAH — A slow start to the first half for Taholah turned into a big third quarter in this Coastal 1B League win over Wishkah on Friday night.

Wishkah and Taholah were nearly at even terms, with the Chitwhins taking a 22-19 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Taholah took the game over with a 19-3 frame.

“We told them it was time to get to work,” Taholah head coach Karl Braden said. “We switched to a different press defense we’ve been working on and that’s what broke it open. I want to commend Wishkah; they played well.”

Denise Dolan led all scorers with 17 points for Taholah (5-0, 7-4), with teammates Kayleah McCrory and Nettie Grover adding 12 points each.

Megan Hill led the Loggerettes (2-3, 5-5) with nine points.

NASELLE — Limiting Lake Quinault to no more than four points in any quarter, Naselle beat the short-handed Elks in a Coastal 1B League game Friday at Naselle.

The Elks (2-4, 4-6) suited up only five players.

“They’ve got a fast team and one thing we’re lacking is speed,” Quinault coach Chris Christiansen said. “Having only five girls playing against a team that’s really fast is tiring.”

No Elk scored more than four points. Espy Silva and Christin Saavedra had seven rebounds apiece and Katlynn Neeland seven steals and six rebounds for Lake Quinault.

Quinault’s originally scheduled game at Clallam Bay today has been cancelled. The Elks host the Montesano C squad on Tuesday.

BROOKLYN — Anna White scored 24 points to power Oakville past North River in a Coast 1B League game on Friday.

The Acorns worked the ball inside to White and edged their way to a 22-point lead at halftime to roll to victory.

“We didn’t have an answer for (White) and she did a really good job inside,” North River coach Sean Pierson said.

Pierson cited Alliyah Schreck, who finished with nine points, for her hustle on both ends of the floor.

Avery Brown scored a team-high 15 points for the Eagles (1-3, 3-10), while Cody Vollan attained a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Marquez Peterson competed the trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points in only 10 minutes.

The Eagles led 24-14 at the half.

“It was not pretty (but) we needed a W,” Elma coach Marvin Prince said. “Marquez and Cody Vollan played very well.”

OYEHUT — Walker Oblad overcame the flu bug to score 19 points as Willapa Valley beat North Beach in a Pacific 2B League match-up Friday at North Beach’s “House of Pain.”

Matt Pearson added 16 points and Ryon Ashley 14 for the Vikings (5-5, 9-5).

Willapa Valley led 36-27 at the half, but winning coach Jay Pearson was less than pleased at that stage.

“The key — and we had a heart-to-heart talk at halftime — is we made a pledge to defense,” Coach Pearson said. “We gave up five (conventional) three-point plays (in the first half) because we didn’t block out. The second half, until we subbed in, they scored seven points.”

Tim Johnson paced North Beach with 16 points, while Rodney Washington tossed in 13 for the Hyaks (1-9, 2-12).

Ashley grabbed eight rebounds for Valley and was also cited for his defense on Johnson. Peter Hamilton and Leonel Ruelas also had eight rebounds each for the Vikings.

Chitwhins 92, Loggers 21

TAHOLAH — Host Taholah kept its pressure defense in the playbook and rotated through its bench early and often in this Coastal 1B League win over Wishkah on Friday.

Zach Cain led all scorers with 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Chitwhins (5-0, 10-1). Teammates Brett Orozco and Terrance Jones each had a double-double — 14 points and 11 rebounds for Orozco and 15 points and 11 rebounds for Jones.

“We tried to play good half-court offense and just a solid defense; that was our focus,” Taholah head coach Mike Rose said. “Wishkah is scrappy. They got a lot of rebounds and we didn’t get too many off the offensive boards.”

“We are young and we struggled,” Wishkah head coach Stefanie Baltzell said. “We are learning and (the boys) showed improvement, even if it didn’t show on the scoreboard.”

Duncan Palmgren led the Loggers (0-5, 0-10), who started three eighth-graders, one freshman and one sophomore, with seven points and 12 rebounds. Eighth grader Cayden Stankavich got his first start and scored six points.

Navigators 47, Wildcats 25

LACEY — Turnovers doomed Ocosta in a Pacific 2B League game against Northwest Christian on Friday.

The Wildcats (4-6, 6-8) turned the ball over 30 times against the Navigators 2-1-2 press defense and Ocosta struggled to find any rhythm.

“Just horrendous offense by us tonight,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “We just flat out got outplayed and we had 30 turnovers tonight. We were not aggressive toward their press and it killed us.”

Zach Allton led the Wildcats with 11 points, while Paul Bjornsgard added six rebounds and six steals and Richard Dueber grabbed eight rebounds.

Ocosta will get a chance for redemption today when they host Northwest Christian.

Comets 73, Elks 22

NASELLE — Racing to a 27-6 lead after one quarter, Naselle went on to trounce Lake Quinault in a Coastal 1B League game Friday at Naselle.

“They trapped us a lot, forced us into a lot of turnovers and we couldn’t get momentum going,” Quinault coach Christian Garcia said. “They played as a great team on offense.”
