Friday Night Football: Montesano hits the road running in win over Sequim

Bulldogs 66, Wolves 33

SEQUIM — Montesano’s offense shook off the road rust quickly, amassing 709 yards of offense, including 521 yards rushing, en route to an entertaining non-league win over Sequim on Friday night.

Junior running back Carson Klinger ran for 229 yards on 21 carries and scored seven total touchdowns, five of them rushing. He also caught a 34-yard TD pass from Trevor Ridgway and ran back a kickoff 81 yards for a score.

“When you get more than 500 yards rushing, you know your offensive line — Hayden Klinger, Taylor Rupe, Ben Lopez, Cole Bradbury, Jared Wallace and tight end Tyler Reninger — is having a good night,” Montesano head coach Terry Jensen said. “Carson played well and had great vision. Trevor played well and made good decisions out there. We made a lot of mistakes, but I’m really proud of the way the kids competed.”

The Wolves stayed in the game by utilizing their special teams. The hosts ran back three kickoff returns for touchdowns and had short fields as well.

Ridgway ran for 94 yards on six carries and threw for 188 yards on 10-of-15 attempts and two scores. Nick Chapman also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass and Dakoyta Reninger led the team with four receptions for 75 yards.

Defensively, Ridgway, Chapman and Reninger each had an interception. Rupe, Kai Olson and Nathan Olson were cited for their defensive work, including sacks for Kai and Nathan Olson.

On Friday, Montesano travels to Castle Rock.

Bruins 54, Eagles 49

WHITE SALMON — Trenton Bhoward’s 80-yard kickoff return with 46 seconds remaining gave White Salmon a wild victory over Elma in a non-league game Friday at White Salmon.

Bhoward’s runback spoiled a dramatic Elma comeback. Down 21-0 at the half, the Eagles did all their scoring in the final two quarters and took a 49-48 lead on Avery Brown’s 5-yard TD pass to tight end Liam Baxter and Alejandro Hernandez’s conversion kick with 59 seconds left.

“This team has a never-die attitude,” Elma coach Ron Clark said of his club. “They have responded really well in the second half of both games. I really think the kids took a look inside and found something they didn’t know they had.”

The Eagles (0-2) began their rally with four touchdowns within a four-minute span in the third quarter.

Senior running back Ira Hartford, who turned in a spectacular performance with 336 yards and six touchdowns on 23 carries, scored all four TDs during that span on runs of 62, 13, 55 and 15 yards.

Hartford then added TD runs of 49 and 23 yards in the fourth quarter.

Hernandez was perfect on seven conversion attempts.

Clark cited Brandon Butcher for outstanding play at wide receiver, cornerback and kick returner. He also praised the offensive line and the defensive work of Baxter and A.J. Brown.

The Eagles return home to face Aberdeen on Friday.

Hyaks 14, Eagles 13

OYEHUT — North Beach topped Life Christian Academy by about the width of a shoelace in a non-league contest at Lt. Jim Davis Field on Friday.

With the Hyaks (1-1) leading 14-7 in the fourth quarter, the Eagles connected on a pass play for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-13 and decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. LCA called a quarterback sneak designed for Michael McKay to carry the ball. McKay ran toward the line, but rolled off to the right side and looked as though he may get to the end zone when North Beach junior Brenden Chaney was able to trip him up and keep the Hyaks one point up — a margin they never relinquished.

“It was a nailbiter,” Hyak coach Todd Bridge said. “It was a big turnaround from last week. We won this game on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with our scout game. We had physical practices and that is where we won tonight’s game. Defensively, they threw everything but the kitchen sink at us, but our kids adjusted well and fortunately we had the right defense at the right time.”

North Beach drew first blood early in the second quarter when Tavo Muro spun off a defender and scampered 60 yards for the touchdown to give the Hyaks an 8-0 lead.

The Eagles answered with a 50-yard touchdown off a sweep play just a couple of minutes later to make it 8-7 at halftime.

It was the Hyak defense that would score the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter. McKay went back for a pass and pump-faked, but as his hand came forward the ball squirted free into the hands of North Beach defensive tackle Ben Poplin. The junior toted the ball 55 yards to the end zone to give the Hyaks the lead for good.

Bridge cited Matt Rowling for his performance at center.

North Beach travels to Toutle Lake next Friday.

Titans 30, T-Wolves 6

PE ELL — Kaelin Jurek’s stellar play on both sides of the ball led Pe Ell-Willapa Valley past Morton-White Pass in a non-league game Friday night at Pe Ell.

Jurek snapped a 6-all halftime deadlock by scoring all three of his touchdowns in the second half.

His 55-yard pick six early in the third quarter — one of his three interceptions for the contest — put the Titans (1-1) ahead to stay.

Jurek added a 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter and closed out the scoring with a 1-yard plunge midway through the fourth period. He also ran in a pair of conversions. The senior running back amassed 122 yards on 27 carries.

Matt Pearson’s 10-yard pass to Ryan Shepherd accounted for PWV’s first-half touchdown. Pearson also ran for a 2-point conversion.

“The first half was pretty rough, just like last week,” Titan head coach Josh Fluke said. “The second half, the boys came out on all cylinders. The line blocked well and the running backs had some good holes to run through. The defense was absolutely spectacular.”

Ever Gutierrez ran for 80 yards on eight carries for the Titans. In addition to Jurek, Tyson Nissell, Tyler Justice and Bradley Prestegord were among PWV’s defensive standouts.

The Titans hit the road to Mossyrock on Friday.

Indians 52, Warriors 20

PUYALLUP — A.J. Sanchez’s 76-yard touchdown run on the opening scrimmage play ignited South Bend past Chief Leschi in a non-league game Friday night at Puyallup.

Sanchez rushed for 187 yards on 10 carries, also scoring on a 37-yard scrimmage run and a 60-yard punt return. Quarterback Ben Byington logged 135 yards on 14 carries, scoring on runs of 27, 37 and 9 yards. He also ran for two conversions and passed to Cody Jones for two more.

Jordan Dockter scored South Bend’s other touchdown on a 4-yard run.

The Indians (2-0) led 38-6 at the half and 52-12 at the three-quarter mark.

“We were able to get off to a quick start again and that was key,” South Bend coach Tom Sanchez said. “Defensively, we need to work on our consistency.”

Josiah Markwell and Byington led Tribe tacklers with 12 and 11 stops, respectively. Coach Sanchez also cited the defensive work of Jonathan Juarez and Michael Oropeza.

The Indians travel to Cathlamet on Friday to face Wahkiakum.

Mounties 49, Gulls 21

RAYMOND — Rainier broke open a tight contest in the fourth quarter to pull away from Raymond in a non-league game Friday at Raymond.

The final score was deceptive, as the Seagulls (0-2) were well in the contest for three quarters. They actually led 15-14 at the half, thanks to a pair of Patrick Edwards touchdown runs and a two-point conversion pass off a botched PAT kick.

Following a pair of Rainier TD runs in the third quarter, Edwards’ 11-yard scoring scamper kept the Gulls within striking distance at 29-21.

But the Mounties scored three times in the fourth quarter to put it away. The visitors racked up 459 yards of total offense.

“They ran option read and sometimes we didn’t do our job,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said. “Another issue for us was we had four fumbles lost. I think I saw some progress, but we made too many mistakes, gave them too many opportunities.”

Edwards rushed for 159 yards on 20 carries, including scoring runs of 67 and 11 yards in the first half. Reese Garcia kicked one conversion and passed for another.

Luke Hamilton led Raymond defenders with 13 solo tackles.

Raymond quarterback Kason Koski missed the contest, undergoing concussion protocol after being injured in the season opener at Napavine. Marcus Anderson filled in behind center.

The Gulls face Friday Harbor in a Saturday afternoon game at Sedro-Woolley.

Mules 40, Wildcats 0

WESTPORT — Limiting Ocosta to one first down, Wahkiakum rolled past the Wildcats in a non-league contest Friday at Griffin Field.

Dominating the line of scrimmage, the Mules led 14-0 at the half before breaking it open with an 18-point third quarter.

Ocosta (1-1) wound up with 45 yards of total offense.

“They played really sound defense,” Wildcat coach Brian Snell said. “We went after what they were giving us, but we couldn’t connect, couldn’t take advantage of the openings. They just ran through us and right over us. Overall, it wasn’t our night.”

Ocosta’s Matt Hart made his season debut at wide receiver with five receptions. He was also credited with a fine defensive effort. Teammate Kobe Beck was cited for all-around play.

The Wildcats travel to Winlock on Friday.
