Four Twin Harbors area wrestlers came up just short of state wrestling glory at the Mat Classic XXXIII state championship meet on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.
Elma’s Donovan Bishop, North Beach’s Westin Fruh and Montesano wrestlers Cole Ekerson and Mateo Sanchez all advanced to the championship match of their respective weight classes over the two-day meet.
Bishop lost via fall at 3:37 to Toppenish’s Rocco Clark III in the 1A 220 pound final.
Fruh lost via technical fall to Liberty Bell’s Noah Holston in the 1B/2B 195 pound championship match.
Ekerson dropped a 5-0 decision to Toppenish’s Marcos Torrez in the 1A 132 pound title match.
It took overtime to decide the victor of the 1A 182 pound final between Sanchez and Deer Park’s Bryon Newby, with Sanchez placing second after the sudden-victory loss.
Led by Ekerson and Sanchez, Montesano placed the highest of any Twin Harbors area team, taking seventh place in the 1A class with 63 points.
Elma finished in 19th place with 29 points.
Based on its depth and fourth-place finishes from Talatheon Warness and Mikey Hatton, Aberdeen took 10th place in the 2A class with 60 points.
Aberdeen’s girls team placed 11th overall with 51 points in the girls team competition
