Hoquiam 2, Elma 1

(Hoquiam wins 3-1 on penalty kicks)

In its losses this season, Hoquiam has struggled to put together a competitive second half.

That wasn’t the case on Thursday as the Grizzlies played a full 80 minutes and then some to earn a 2-1 victory – 3-1 on penalty kicks – over Elma at Davis Field in Elma.

The Grizzlies (4-6 overall, 4-5 1A Evergreen) trailed early on as the Eagles (5-5, 5-5) got on the scoreboard just a few minutes into the game.

In the second minute of the game, Elma sophomore forward Luis Torres sent a corner kick toward senior forward Ivan Torres, who headed the ball off a Hoquiam defender and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

After halftime, Hoquiam knotted the game up at 1-1 when midfielder J.B. Fabian sent a ball toward the back post of the Elma goal. Sophomore midfielder Michael Garcia connected Fabian’s cross with a leaping, right-footed one-timer to tie the game in the 50th minute.

The game remained tied throughout the remainder of the second half and two overtime periods, forcing a penalty-kick shootout.

In the shootout, Hoquiam goal keeper Bryce Molina – who was injured and left the game in the first half but returned after halftime – made the save on Elma’s first attempt.

Fabian converted for Hoquiam followed by an Elma miss off the post.

Grizzlies junior forward Santiago Martinez scored to put Hoquiam up 2-0.

Elma freshman defender Jordan Kain scored followed by Israel Rosales converting for Hoquiam.

Molina then saved his second attempt of the shootout, securing the Grizzlies’ victory.

“We had to fight to tie this game. We had one sub first half and second half we had no subs due to a player having to leave the game early. We finally played like a team for an entire game, not just the first half,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “For the team, this win means a lot. It proves that when certain players are out others are capable of stepping up and filling the position. More importantly it boosts our confidence which is something we need. For me, I’ve always known what this team is capable of and tonight they did it.”

Elma head coach Carson Seaberg, whose team has had its troubles finishing its chances this season, said Thursday’s loss was a continuation of that trend.

“A little bit of the same thing,” he said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to create as much offense as we needed to but our defense held up well and they went long time without even being dangerous.”

With the win, Hoquiam moves a half-game behind Elma and in a tie with Forks for fifth place in the 1A Evergreen League.

Hoquiam hosts Rochester at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Elma sits in fourth place in the league standings and hosts second-place Montesano at 7 p.m. on Monday in Elma.
