Elma 4, Hoquiam 0

Elma scored three goals in the second half to beat Hoquiam 4-1 in a 1A Evergreen League game on Wednesday at Davis Field in Elma.

The Eagles (9-5 overall, 8-3 1A Evergreen) got on the scoreboard when senior forward Cason Seaberg fed a pass to junior midfielder Ivan Torres, who scored in the 17th minute for a 1-0 lead.

The game remained that way through the remainder of the first 40 minutes as Elma had the majority of possession but Hoquiam (4-10, 4-7) had its fair share of chances in a back-and-forth first half.

In the second half, Elma’s offense got to work.

Eagles senior midfielder Jose Perez got the ball forward to Seaberg, who poked a shot past Hoquiam keeper Mauricio Avila-Guzman for a goal in the 46th minute.

With Elma sustaining pressure inside the Hoquiam defensive third, Eagles senior Chance Plata was fouled in the penalty box, earning a penalty kick. Seaberg converted the PK for a 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute.

The Eagles would complete the scoring 10 minutes later when Perez sent an arcing lob toward the Grizzlies goal. Seaberg sped through the Grizzlies backline and tapped it into the net for a hat trick, his 29th goal of the season and 95th of his stellar prep career.

“In the second half, as far as coaching and what we planned, I was really pleased,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “We cleaned up a lot of (Hoquiam’s) opportunities, we won a lot of balls in the midfield and in the critical moments I felt like we were better than we have been.”

Avila-Guzman had six saves for Hoquiam, which had four shots on-goal as a team.

“Individually, all of our players played 100% and gave it their all,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “What we were missing was working as a team. I don’t know if that comes off the back-to-back losses to Monte and Eatonville … But I could tell after the Eatonville loss, yesterday at practice and even in warm-ups today, the kids’ heads weren’t there. We weren’t mentally focused on the game and it showed.”

Elma sits in fourth place in the league standings, a game back of Eatonville and Raymond-South Bend.

The Eagles take on Forks at 7 p.m. Friday in Forks.

Hoquiam sits in fifth place in league and will host Ilwaco at 6 p.m. on Friday.
