Bobcats splash past Timberline in soccer

Aberdeen conquers miserable weather to beat Timberline, 3-0

Aberdeen conquered miserable conditions to blank Timberline, 3-0, in a non-league boys soccer game Saturday at Stewart Field.

Hulizes Chavez scored twice as the Bobcats (7-3) ran their winning streak to four.

Although the artificial turf at least ensured that the match would be played, heavy rain turned Stewart Field — in the words of AHS coach Larry Fleming — “into a wading pool in most places.” This forced both teams to adopt more of an aerial game than usual.

Outshooting the Class 3A Blazers, 14-3, the Bobcats opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Chavez took a pass from Tony Oropeza and banked a shot off the far post and into the net.

Chavez’s header, off a free kick from Oropeza, made it 2-0 at the half.

Oropeza added the final goal in the 59th minute on a hard shot from about 18 yards out.

“The boys played well and put a lot of great combinations together up front, especially considering the conditions,” Fleming said. “Our defense was solid as well and that led to many great chances in transition.”

Defenders Brendan Ford, Enrique Cuevas and Dillen Espana and midfielder Luis Martinez were credited with strong performances.

Timberline won the JV contest, 3-2. Mariano Soto and Tony Hernandez scored for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen returns to Evergreen 2A Conference play Tuesday at Tumwater.
