Aberdeen starts boys swim season at Grays Harbor Relays

A young Aberdeen High School boys swimming team took to the water competitively for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon as the host of the Grays Harbor Relays.

In a small field, Timberline used its newly gained depth to outdistance rival Capital, 128-100, to win the relay meet. Aberdeen was third with 64 points.

“With barely two weeks of practice complete, the boys did an incredible job,” AHS head coach Angie Durr said. “The boys’ ability to give everything into every race, regardless of who they were swimming against, continues to make me proud. Because of the unusual nature of this meet, I can have swimmers in events outside of their comfort zones, which allows me to better evaluate the team overall. All the boys had a great day.”

Aberdeen won one event on the day, claiming the 200-yard freshman-sophomore freestyle relay at 2:02.65. The team — freshman Jordan Rounsivill and sophomores Tye Williamson, Trevor Mullin and Conner Gates — is an equal mix of first and second-year swimmers.

Junior Jared Durr was the first AHS swimmer to qualify for the District IV 2A meet in February when his lead-off backstroke leg in the 400-yard medley relay was under the qualifying time mark at 1:17.42.

Coach Durr cited freshmen Brennan Munoz and Brice Kola for their swims.

On Tuesday, Aberdeen will travel to Timberline for a non-league dual meet.
