Aberdeen’s slim lead in the 2A Evergreen League fastpitch slipped away after a 26-11 loss to W.F. West on Wednesday at the Bishop Sports Complex in Aberdeen.

Playing without the services of standout starting pitcher and slugger Lilly Camp, Aberdeen was out of form, committing several errors and failing to thwart Bearcats rallies.

The Bobcats (6-5 overall, 4-2 2A Evergreen) got off to an ominous start as W.F. West (9-3, 5-1) scored five runs in the top of the first off Aberdeen starter Rylee Hendrickson.

Aberdeen responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead, highlighted by two-run doubles by Shyanna Patrick and Britten Neal and an RBI single from Hendrickson to take the lead.

The Bobcats defense struggled to contain the Bearcats without Camp in the circle. W.F. West scored seven runs off Aberdeen reliever Abby Mainio as the Bobcats defense committed three errors in the top of the second.

Once again, Aberdeen’s offense responded. The Bobcats pulled to within a run at 12-11 after scoring a run on an error and a wild pitch followed by back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Scotlyn Lecomte and Neal.

That was as close as the Cats would get as W.F. West scored three in the fourth and put the game in mercy-rule territory with 11 runs in the fifth.

Aberdeen was led by standout Aili Scott, who was a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored from her leadoff spot. Neal went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the Cats.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 1, Ocosta 0

Two of the most promising young pitchers in the 2B class squared off as Pe Ell-Willapa Valley edged Ocosta 1-0 in the opening game of a doubleheader on Wednesday in Westport.

The game featured two top flight pitchers in the Titans’ Lauren Emery and Ocosta’s Jessie Gilbert, and they didn’t disappoint.

Emery allowed one hit and three walks while striking out 15 Wildcats while Gilbert allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks with 17 strikeouts.

The lone run of the game came in the top of the sixth when Lauren Matlock led off with a walk followed by a Jillian Hodel single. Payton Peterson then reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Grace Huber worked a walk off Gilbert on four straight pitches to force in Matlock for the game’s only run.

That was all Emery would need as she struck out the side in the sixth – working around an intentional walk to Gilbert – and followed that with a 1-2-3 seventh to give PWV the win.

Emery threw 88 pitches – 66 for strikes – and allowed a first-inning single to Samantha Schlegel for Ocosta’s only hit of the game.

Ocosta’s Zaida Morales knotted the game up once again with a two-run single in the fifth, scoring Noel Cuzdey and Jessie Gilbert to tie the game at 4-all.

The Titans regained the lead when Grace Huber drove in Peterson with a single in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, three Titans errors opened the door for the Wildcats, and they barged right through.

With Gilbert aboard with a leadoff walk and one out, Rasmus reached on an error, chasing PWV starter Lauren Emery from the game.

Eliza Barnum entered in relief and struck out Morales for the second out.

Ava Weimar reached base on PWV’s second error of the inning, loading the bases. Jolissa Schlegel then walked to bring in Gilbert with the tying run and was followed by Sophie Olive reaching on an error to score Rasmus for a 6-5 Ocosta lead. Samantha Schlegel followed with a walk to give the Wildcats a 7-5 lead.

Gilbert took care of the rest, getting Lauren Matlock to fly out followed by two strikeouts to end the game and give Ocosta a rare win over the defending state champions.

Gilbert earned the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk with 12 strikeouts.

PWV sits one game behind Raymond-South Bend for the top spot in the league and will host Ilwaco for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Pe Ell.

Ocosta is tied with Ilwaco for fourth place in the top-heavy league standings and took on Toledo Friday at Toledo High School.
