2B State Championships: Ocosta ousted in semis, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley finishes third

YAKIMA — The Ocosta Wildcats and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans entered Saturday’s competition on opposite sides of the tournament. Ocosta earned a spot in the state semifinals while PWV was relegated to the consolation bracket.

At the end of play, it was PWV that held a third-place state trophy at the 2B State Softball Championships at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.

1B State 3rd/4th Place Game: PWV 13, Adna 4

Sidney Pollard’s three-run home run in the first inning gave the Titans a lead they would never relinquish en route to a 13-4 win over Adna to claim third place in the 2B state tournament on Saturday.

Pollard went 5-for-5 with the home run, two doubles and five RBI to lead the Titan’s offensive onslaught.

The Titans added to a 3-2 lead in the second with four runs, two coming off a Kamryn Adkins double.

After scoring four more runs in the sixth inning, PWV’s prolific offense totalled 13 runs for the game. The Titans scored 12 or more runs in each of their six tournament games, the lone loss being Friday’s 8-4 setback in the second round to eventual 1B champion, Northwest Christian. PWV outscored its opponents 64-15 in the consolation bracket.

“We had one slight hiccup against NWC on Friday night,” Titans head coach Ken Olson said. “Otherwise, we were solid.”

1B Consolation Semis: PWV 19, Ocosta 9

The Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans scored 16 runs in the first two innings en route to beating the Ocosta Wildcats, 19-9, in a consolation bracket semifinal of the 2B State Championships on Saturday at the Gateway Sports Complex.

PWV (24-5 overall) scored five runs in the first inning on doubles by Adkins, Annika Mason and Jeorgi Ritzman.

Trailing 5-0, Ocosta rallied for four runs in the second on run-scoring hits from Evalyn Marsh, Kjirstin Hopfer and Kaylee Barnum.

But that was as close as the Wildcats (22-8) would get, as the Titans’ offense erupted for 11 runs on eight hits in the bottom of the second inning to put the game out of reach. PWV scored the 11 runs on five doubles, three singles, a hit batter and three crucial errors.

The Titans’ Katelyn McGouch had two doubles and drove in a pair of runs in the frame.

Seven PWV hitters collected at least two hits in the game. The Titans’ Sidney Pollard went 3-for-4 with five runs scored while teammate Britany Patrick had three hits and scored four runs. Adkins drove in a team-high four runs for the Titans.

Ocosta’s offense was led by Barnum, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

1B State Semifinals: Napavine 7, Ocosta 5

Ocosta’s defense surrendered a two-run lead by committing four errors as Napavine grabbed the lead with a four-run third inning in a 1B State Championshp semfinal game.

Leading 2-1 with two outs in the third, Ocosta’s defense committed three-consecutive errors, allowing three runs to score as Napavine took a 4-2 lead.

Napavine made it 6-2 an inning later, sparked Music’s run-scoring triple.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ocosta climbed back into the game when Krystal Morales led off with a double and later scored on Kianna Battiste’s triple. Two batters later, Battiste scored on Hopfer’s sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Wildcats crept closer in the sixth, when Barnum doubled and later scored on a Kristi Raffelson single to make it 6-5.

But Napavine added an insurance run in the seventh and retired the Wildcats in order in the bottom half of the frame to eliminate the Wildcats from state-title contention.
