2016-17 Twin Harbors Class 2B/1B Girls Basketball Preview Capsules

Here is a listing of 2016-17 high school girls basketball preview capsules for the Twin Harbors small schools, submitted by the coaches.

Raymond

Coach: Jason Koski (14th coaching, first since a six-year break).

Returning Letterwinners: Mikayla Collins 5-10 sr. post (third year), Aubree Gardner 5-6 sr. all-league HM guard (third year), Winter Newman 5-9 sr. all-league HM wing/post (third year), Cydney Flemetis 5-5 sr. all-league guard (third) and Makenna Williams 5-9 jr. guard/wing (second year)

Promising Newcomers: Isabel Mora 5-7 soph. post, Avery Harland 5-8 frosh wing, Destiny Souvannavanh 5-5 frosh guard, Sadie Warnstadt 5-7 soph. post and Aiyana Stepp 5-7 frosh post.

Coach’s Comments: The players have been great in their work ethic and willingness to learn new skills and knowledge about the game of basketball. With the low numbers, we will definitely be looking forward to some kids improving and gaining some very valuable game time experience.

Willapa Valley

Coach: Colby Rogers (first-year head coach, 18th high school season).

Returning Letterwinners: Madison Huber 5-6 sr. guard, Traci Hoffman 5-7 sr. post, Sidney Pollard 5-5 jr. guard, Amber Anderson 5-5 jr. guard, Hannah Cook 5-5 soph. guard, Brooke Friese 5-4 soph. guard, Bailee Betrozoff 5-4 forward, Kamryn Adkins 5-4 soph forward, Grace Hodel 5-6 soph. forward.

Promising Newcomer: Britney Patrick 5-8 frosh forward.

Coach’s Comments: A great season for Willapa Valley would be to finish in the top half of the league and provide a lot of quality varsity experience for the underclassmen. We are relatively young, but return a number of kids that have varsity experience. Gradual improvement is a very valid expectation for this group.

League Favorites: Ilwaco and Raymond.

South Bend

Coach: Gary Wilson (19th season coaching at South Bend).

Returning Letterwinners: Ashley Pearson 5-6 sr. guard/forward, Katelyn Doyle 5-4 jr. guard, Livvie Ogilvie 5-4 soph. guard, Hannah Byington 5-5 soph. guard, Jessica Sanchez 5-7 soph. guard/forward, Karley Reidinger 5-9 soph. forward.

Promising Newcomers: Kailee Maneman 5-6 soph. guard/forward, Alice Rohr 5-4 frosh guard/forward.

Coach’s Comments: We are are basically still a young team. We see steady improvement every day. This is a hard working group of competitive girls who love the game and want to improve. This is a fun team to be around.

League Favorites: Ilwaco.

North Beach

Coach: Larry Moore (30-plus years at North Beach, second year with the girls).

Returning letterwinners: Hannah Avery 5-5 sr. guard, Helen Garman 6-1 sr. post, Reilly Moore 5-4 sr. guard, Mariah Vogler 5-8 jr. wing, Adelina Desamours 5-3 soph. guard, Jeri Herbrand 5-5 soph. guard.

Promising Newcomers: Lorin Cox 5-6 frosh wing, Caela McGehee 5-7 frosh post, Brooklyn Neal 5-6 frosh post.

Coaches Comments: We are low on numbers, but high in positive spirit. The girls have been putting forth great effort. I am really excited to see what this team can do. There is great senior leadership and positive energy.

League favorites: Ilwaco and Raymond.

Lake Quinault

Coach: Chris Christiansen (first-year head coach, former/current assistant basketball/golf/baseball coach for three seasons at Lake Quinault).

Returning Letterwinners: Esperanza Silva 5-8 sr. PG, Alex Blackburn 5-8 sr. center, Alejandra Barragan 5-7 sr. PF, Gema Ochoa 5-5 jr. SG, Christine Saavedra 5-7 soph. SF, Elizabeth Guadarrama 5-6 soph. SF, Katlynn Neeland 5-6 frosh PG/SG.

Promising Newcomers: Trina Lewis 5-5 jr. PG/SG, Bree Obi 5-8 soph. PF, Kariana Cole 5-5 frosh SG, Juanita Ferry 4-10 frosh SG.

Coach’s Comments: We have a fairly young team with little experience. However, we make up for that with lots of heart. It is going to be a long, tough, and fun season, and I’m looking forward to it.

Wishkah

Coach: Dave Busz (20 years of coaching at Wishkah).

Returning Letterwinners: Ally Ancich 5-10 sr. post, Jesse Thompson 5-7 jr. wing, Megan Hill 5-7 jr. PG, Erica Bomhoff 5-5 frosh PG/wing, Meggie Sorenson 5-8 sr. post.

Promising Newcomers: Mackenzie Robertson 5-3 soph. post/wing, Aleah Clevenger 5-5 frosh wing, Trista Cochran 5-5 frosh wing, Kelsey Berhhardy 5-5 frosh wing, Brooke Haskey 5-6 8th grade post, Baylee Buchanan 5-3 8th grade PG.

Coach’s Comments: Beginning this second season with our program with four returning starters, a decisive improvement in our win-loss record will be evident. I am optimistic about this year and also the future with the promise our underclassmen being. Defense and rebounding will be our strengths and scoring is our focus.

League favorites: Naselle.

Taholah

Coach: Karl Braden (first year at Taholah).

Returning Letterwinners: Celisha Raldston 5-8 soph., Kayleah McCrory 5-7 soph., Nettie Grover 5-10 soph., Denise Dolan 5-5 soph., Tomika Grover 5-9 soph., Charlotte Pope 5-8 soph.

Promising Newcomers: Ruby Pope 5-5 frosh, Lahala Randall 5-8 frosh, Kalee Krukoff 5-10 frosh, Summer ManyWhitehorses 5-11 jr.

Coach’s Comments: We have a young team this year. This is going to be an exciting year. We will be competitive and we’re stressing fundamentals. We’ll grow together as the year progresses.
