Emery Dee Haggin, a longtime resident of Montesano, Washington, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 11, 2023. He was born in Fresno, California, but his heart belonged to Grays Harbor, where he spent the majority of his youth and retirement years, surrounded by dear friends and family.

Emery was a Hoquiam Grizzly through and through. He was elected Junior class President and even earned the prestigious honor of representing his school at Boys State in the Washington state Capitol. On the football field, he ran with such flair that he earned the nickname “Crazy Legs Haggin.” When Emery’s family decided to move to California during his high school years, the local community and Coach Swarthout fought hard to keep young Haggin a Hoquiam Grizzly. The Meyer family opened their hearts and home to Emery, treating him like one of their own. Their son, Roger Meyer, remained a cherished and lifelong friend.

Emery’s adventures didn’t end with high school. He served in the US Air Force and was stationed in Japan alongside his brother, Bill Haggin. Japan left an indelible mark on him, sparking a lifelong passion for travel, which he enjoyed with his devoted wife Linda. They were happily married for 62 years. Emery pursued his teaching degree at Fresno State College in California. He helped fund his education by bartending at night, where he became known for crafting the most delicious margaritas. One cherished memory was mixing a bespoke cocktail for then Governor Ronald Reagan, who would later become President. Emery was also an active political force, working on federal, state, and local campaigns, and remaining politically active and outspoken until his very last breath.

Teaching was not the only arena where Emery left his mark. He was a legendary football coach, receiving heartfelt thank-you letters and calls from former students and players whose lives he had touched over the years.

Emery is survived by his wife Linda Haggin of Montesano, Washington, son Kelly Haggin and wife Debbie of Washington, daughter Missy Villapudua and husband John of France, daughter Darcy Bain of Oregon, grandsons Joshua Haggin and his wife Sharlin in Arizona, Dillon Haggin of Washington, Brendon Bain and his wife Kimberly of Oregon, great granddaughters Kyla and Emery June due in January, beloved sister Eloise Frickel and her husband Don of Washington, and loyal feline companion Katie.

A private memorial service will be held in November. Please contact the family for more information. A life well lived and a man much loved. Rest in peace.
