Dan House, 83, of North River, passed away at home on March 5, 2022.

Dan was a lifetime resident of North River, graduating from North River High School in 1956. He enjoyed playing basketball and football during his time in school and went on to play basketball and football for Grays Harbor Community College.

In 1961, he was married to Barbara “Jean” Tallman of Raymond, Washington, and they settled onto the property where he grew up in the small community of Artic. Dan started work as a choker setter at Weyerhaeuser and then worked his way up to shovel operator in Cosmopolis, Washington before eventually becoming a logging foreman in the Raymond/Pe Ell area.

His passion for sports was unprecedented, his gardening was legendary but his love for his family and being a doting grandfather was his greatest lifelong achievement. All who knew him would say he never knew a stranger, and he was one of the most generous souls they have ever met.

He is survived by his son Russell House of Artic, daughter Kelly Schiedler (Ron) of Turner, Oregon, his three grandchildren: Cody Schiedler (Edie Schiedler — expecting Dan’s first great-grandchild in May) stationed in Germany, Erin Schiedler of San Diego, California; Jacob Schiedler of Bend, Oregon, his partner Karen Jackson and family of Montesano, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary House, his brothers Neal and Jack House and his wife Jean House.

A celebration of life will be held on March 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Artic Community Hall.
