Charles Bernard Herzog of Montesano passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019, at Harborview Medical Center. He was 84. Charles was born on Nov. 18, 1934, to Omar and Grace Herzog in Scrambler, Minnesota. Charles spent part of his childhood in Pelican Rapids before the family moved to Hoquiam, Washington. It was in Hoquiam that he graduated high school and went on to attend Grays Harbor College for Football.

In December of 1954, Charles joined the United States Navy. He proudly served four years on the U.S.S. Hornet and honorable discharged on Dec. 18, 1958. Shortly after he married Shirley Ann Herzog on July 3, 1960, in Sequim, Washington. She supported Charles throughout his career at Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill all the way through his retirement in 1994.

Charles enjoyed golfing at Oakridge Golf Course, hunting in the Olympic Peninsula, and fishing in the local rivers. He loved sports and stayed actively involved in the Montesano Little League. He coached Little League to Babe Ruth and served as President for some time.

Charles is survived by his wife Shirley Herzog of Montesano; son John Herzog of Montesano; daughters Cheri Schrible of Montesano, and Carole Falk of Hemmit, California; sisters Marge Engebretson of Pelican Rapids and Deloris Peterson of Fargo, North Dakota; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Omar and Grace Herzog and siblings Keogh Herzog, Clinton Herzog, Kenneth Herzog, T.J. Herzog, Vince Herzog, Marvel Peterson, and Toots Lefluer, and Eloise Issacson.

A celebration of Charles’ life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 1 to 6 p.m. With a “toast to Chuck” at 4 p.m. at 7 Miller Lane, Montesano.
