Bernice Haner, age 93, passed away peacefully Feb. 13, 2022 in Anacortes, Washington. She was born on Oct. 3, 1928 in Hoquiam, Washington to William and Anna Brooks. Bernice graduated from Hoquiam High School. After marrying W.I. Haner Jr. in 1947 and raising six children she later attended Central Washington University receiving her degree in Education where she would then work for the Aberdeen School District for a number of years.

She moved to Anacortes in 1980 where she worked for many years at The Store Grocery.

She had a passion for crocheting, sewing, quilting and was one of the founders of the Fidalgo Island Quilters (FIQ).

When it came time for retirement, she decided to fulfill a dream of hers by joining the Peace Corps and found herself in Nepal helping women make things to support their families.

When she returned from the Peace Corps, she continued to stay busy volunteering with the FIQ, her church, spending time with family and friends and working retail at a fabric store.

Bernice was also known as “YaYa” to many of the family members, a name given to her many years ago by one of her grandchildren. She was friends with many and loved dearly.

Her positive attitude and sense of humor will truly be missed by her family and friends.

Preceding Bernice in death were her parents, William and Anna Brooks, three sisters, seven brothers, sons Thomas Haner, Timothy Haner, grandchildren James Brawley, Jerrold Brawley and Adeline McIntyre.
