WSDOT seeks comment on Highway 12, US 101 problem areas

Very short online survey allows for comment on several solutions to congestion problems

Problem areas of Highway 12 and U.S. 101 in Grays Harbor County and possible solutions to congestion problems are part of a survey being conducted through June 2 by the State Department of Transportation.

“We’re asking for input from the people who regularly use these congested areas,” said Dennis Engel, Department of Transportation Planning Manager. “Their feedback will help us determine where to prioritize needs statewide.”

The problem areas highlighted in the survey, and potential solutions to ease traffic in those areas, include:

Highway 12 between Hornsby Way/Wishkah Street to past South Fleet Street. Possible solutions include a new pedestrian crosswalk with a flashing beacon, transit pullouts and putting a roundabout at Newell Street with an overpass at Chehalis Street.

Highway 12 between Sargent Boulevard and Copeland Road. Possible solutions include advanced flashing warning signs indicating upcoming left turns for westbound traffic, increasing traffic signal timing during high traffic weekends, and park and rides near Central Park, Satsop or Brady for express transit service between Aberdeen and Olympia.

U.S. 101 exit to State Route 109. Possible solutions include creating a double left turn lane and possible right turn lane from northbound 101 to State Route 109 or putting a roundabout at that intersection.

Grays Harbor County is one of five counties included in the survey; the others are Clallam, Jefferson, Mason and Thurston. People taking the survey can comment on just the Grays Harbor section or all five. The survey is open until midnight Friday, June 2 and can be found online at bit.ly/2ruPg2w.
