Wrongway driver of stolen vehicle causes two-car crash on State Route 12 at Elma

The driver of a stolen vehicle led State Patrol troopers on a pursuit along State Route 12 Tuesday night, ending in a two-car crash off the highway near Third Street in Elma.

Trooper Chelsea Hodgson said on Twitter that troopers chased the vehicle for a time, but terminated the pursuit when the driver began driving the wrong way.

According to a State Patrol memo, the 23-year-old Tacoma man driving the stolen vehicle wound up eastbound in the westbound lanes. A second vehicle, driven by a 63-year-old Hillsboro, Oregon, man, was westbound on State Route 12 when the stolen vehicle struck his vehicle shortly after 6 p.m. near Third Street in Elma.

“Thankfully no one sustained serious injury in the subsequent collision on State Route 12 in Elma,” said Hodgson. That included a 31-year-old female passenger from Tacoma in the westbound vehicle.

“The driver was taken into custody without further incident,” said Hodgson. According to the State Patrol memo, the Tacoma man is facing charges of attempting to elude, reckless driving and possession of a stolen vehicle.
