State Route 8 fatal crash victim identified

A mail truck driver whose body was found inside of a wrecked mail truck on Wednesday, Aug. 17, has been identified, the Washington State Patrol said.

Zakariya W. Ahmed, 25, of Seattle, was found lying underneath six feet of Amazon boxes inside of the mail truck. The truck was not a United States Postal Service truck, as had been previously reported in The Daily World.

“Apparently, it wasn’t a USPS truck, it was a private contractor that delivers Amazon packages,” according to Katherine Weatherwax, public information officer for Washington State Patrol, on Thursday morning, Aug. 18.

The truck Ahmed was driving was found 65 feet off State Route 8 at milepost 4 east of Elma. The wreck was reported to WSP at about 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Weatherwax.

East Grays Harbor Fire and Rescue, and McCleary Fire Department (MFD) were dispatched to the crash scene at 9:52 a.m., according to an East Grays Harbor Fire and Rescue Facebook post.

The mail truck was heading west on State Route 8 prior to the crash. Before the truck left the roadway, it hit a guardrail, according to a WSP press memo.

“Vehicle one struck the guardrail several times prior to leaving the roadway and vaulting into a stand of timber,” the memo stated.

While the cause of the crash is still unknown as of Thursday morning, Weatherwax said there was no braking prior to the crash, which means he was possibly speeding “too fast” or that he might have fallen asleep.

“The (truck) was so mangled,” said Weatherwax, who noted WSP is unsure if Ahmed was wearing his seat belt based on the damage to the truck.

Three cars were involved in a crash in the same vicinity. The crash involved a car that struck an East Grays Harbor Fire and Rescue ambulance that was parked on-scene and responding to the mail truck crash, according to the East Grays Harbor Fire and Rescue statement. A third car had struck the car that hit the ambulance.

“When McCleary Fire Department arrived on scene, they blocked lane one with their apparatus,” the Facebook post stated. “Unfortunately, Rescue 12-11 was hit by a vehicle that didn’t slow with traffic.”

There were no injuries reported from MFD, or from the other two vehicles that were involved.

“This is a serious reminder to always be mindful and safe when approaching vehicles on the side of the road,” the Facebook post stated. “Firefighters were exiting the truck at the time of the incident, so we are thankful this was a non-injury collision.”

The two crashes Wednesday blocked traffic on State Route 8 until about 7 p.m., Wednesday, according to Weatherwax.

The fatal crash on Wednesday was the second such incident in Grays Harbor County in less than a week. On Aug. 12, a Hoquiam man tried turning his vehicle left onto Ocean Beach Road and failed to yield at the intersection of U.S. 101 North and Ocean Beach Road, and then hit a white Toyota Tundra, which was headed south on U.S. 101 North.

A 15-year old boy, who was inside the Honda Civic, was pronounced dead at that scene. Two other 15-year old boys, who were also in the Honda Civic, were also seriously injured in the collision and were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The two 15-year old boys were in critical condition as of Wednesday, according to Weatherwax.
