Spots available for South Beach Citizens Academy

There’s still space available in the City of Westport and Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office South Beach Citizens Academy, a 12-week program to educate and inform the residents of the South Beach community about the many aspects of law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

The academy will give attendees the opportunity to see the benefits of public service and learn about the challenges and demands associated with law enforcement. Attendees will learn about selected police units and will participate in practical application that demonstrates several aspects of the police officer’s job. They will also learn about the many facets of the criminal justice system and how police interact with the court system, gain a greater understanding of the safety procedures required in policing, and will learn some of the techniques used in addressing crime on the South Beach community.

According to a statement from the city and Sheriff’s Office, the “ultimate goal is to foster relationships that will bridge the gaps between law enforcement, communities, and businesses. We hope to create an alliance that leaves us with voices in the community to act as ambassadors to build solid partnerships, thus creating a better quality of life for those we serve.”

The Citizens Academy is a 13-class, 12-week program beginning Jan. 7. Minimum age for applicants is 16. Classes will be on Tuesday nights, 6:30-9:30 p.m. There is a possibility of hands-on classes that would require a Saturday venue. The hours for a Saturday will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Examples of the potential topics include:

• Patrol procedures

• Drug investigations

• Criminal defense

• Firearms training

• Dispatch (911)

• Corrections

• DUI enforcement

• Emergency vehicle operation

• Firearms training

Preference will be given to applicants of the Westport/Grayland community or of the Ocosta School District. If room is available, applicants from the greater Grays Harbor area are welcome to attend.

Both applications and waivers must be completed. Applicants will also be subject to a background check.
