Six box cars carrying grain derail in Montesano

Story updated Dec. 23

Six rail cars carrying grain derailed near the intersection of Monte Elma Road and Old Beacon Road in Montesano Monday afternoon.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office and Montesano Police Department responded to the area to reports of an explosion shortly after 2 p.m. The report of an explosion turned out to be incorrect, but six box cars had derailed, said Sheriff’s Office Chief Criminal Deputy Kevin Schrader.

“Original reports indicated that the train was on fire and an explosion had occurred. These facts were unfounded,” he said, adding there were no hazardous material concerns related to the derailment, nor were there any injuries.

Genesee and Wyoming Railroad Services spokesman Michael Williams said Tuesday that the cause of the derailment was still under invesigation, and “We expect to have the track back in service Saturday.”

Monte Elma Road from Beacon Avenue to Poplar Road was still closed Wednesday. There are detours in place.
