A two-alarm fire gutted a home in the 200 block of West Fifth Street in Aberdeen Saturday night. One occupant suffered burns after going back inside the burning structure to retrieve some belongings, according to Aberdeen Fire Department Battalion Chief Dave Golding.
The call came in at 10:54 p.m. Saturday. The first unit on scene found the two-story home “heavily involved with fire,” said Golding, and a neighboring structure was being threatened by the flames.
Two adult men, one woman and one child were in the home and were alerted to the fire by their smoke detector.
“They all safely exited the home, however, one of the residents re-entered the burning structure to retrieve some belongings,” said Golding. “That individual suffered first degree, and possibly some second degree burns.” The victim went to the hospital by private vehicle.
The home sustained significant damage, and is likely a total loss. The neighboring home also sustained damage to windows, siding, wood fence, and the roof, said Golding
The initial response consisted of a command unit, three engines, and a medic unit with a total of 11 personnel. The fire was initially fought from a defensive stance with emphasis on protecting the neighboring home, said Golding. A second alarm was called for, bringing a ladder truck and three ambulances with an additional 13 personnel, including the chief and assistant chief. The fire was brought under control at 12:19 a.m. At that time crews were able to enter the structure to fully extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
