Man arrested in January standoff receives lengthy sentence

His location near a school made his arrest a priority

A man arrested early in 2023 after a standoff near Miller Junior High School was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug-related offenses last week in Grays Harbor Superior Court.

Anthony D. Jenkins, 51, received an 84 month sentence for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver with an additional 24 months for being within a school zone, according to a news release by the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office.

Jenkins’ initial arrest was a coordinated effort between the Department of Corrections and the county’s drug task force, said Sgt. Darrin King of the task force.

“The guy had a DOC warrant. We heard he had been dealing in a house in the 100 block of East Harriman Street,” King said. “You gotta decide, what’s the best way how we can handle this. We decided, we’ll call DOC, tell DOC. They asked if we wanted to assist.”

Jenkins’ location near the school made his apprehension a high priority, King said. Jenkins’ DOC warrant came from his noncompliance with the sex offender registry.

The arrest, occurring on Jan. 25, 2023, was further assisted by the Aberdeen Police Department due to the proximity to the school. Jenkins initially barricaded himself inside the residence, before officers pepper sprayed and then breached the barricades, The Daily World previously reported.

“When we went in the house, DOC officers saw drugs in the room. DOC, because he’s one of their parolees, they have the ability to search the residence. We assisted them,” King said. “Found drugs, scales, baggies — all the elements of him supporting making deals.”

With the evidence in hand, the drug task force took the case forward, King said, as Jenkins opted to exercise his right to a trial.

“He took it to trial. He ended up losing,” King said. “We were able to show he had the drugs and all the elements that he was dealing.”

After a trial and conviction, Jenkins was sentenced last week.

“It’s someone we’ve dealt with quite a bit,” King said. “It’s good to see justice served.”
