Log truck with oversized load snags, damages power line in downtown Monte

No injuries were reported, and many say it was luck that no one was on the sidewalks Tuesday morning when a log truck’s load was too tall and grabbed an overhead line on Pioneer Avenue in Montesano. Chief of Police Brett Vance said multiple buildings, a vehicle, and power connections were damaged along with blocks of fiber optic cable.

It was reported just after 10:30 a.m., Vance said the first officers on the scene found a log truck with an oversized load had hooked an arterial line spanning Pioneer Avenue Before the driver was aware and stopped, the pulling of the line caused damage in the two blocks north and south of the initial contact.

Debora Wood was working in her office at Price & Price Real Estate when she said she caught a glimpse of the log truck going by and realized it had snagged a wire crossing the road.

“I said, ‘oh my gosh.’ I thought I would run out to stop him somehow but I decided that wasn’t a good idea,” she said. Before she could even react the cable snapped. “I was afraid it was going to come the through front window. It was like a whip cracking.”

One of her real estate broker’s vehicles was the only vehicle damaged when the cable snapped back toward the building.

Pioneer Avenue and Marcy Avenue West were blocked off for several hours to allow Century Link and Grays Harbor PUD crews to repair the damaged lines. Crews were seen in the area the following night continuing some of those repairs.

In all, approximately four or five buildings were damaged along with some city property. A vehicle was severely damaged when one end of the broken line struck it directly. Multiple communication and PUD lines were also torn from their buildings and poles.

A representative from the Washington State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division said that one of their trainers was in the area and conducted the investigation, A report is pending.
