Hoquiam district’s back-to school fair and community day is Monday

Students and their parents in the Hoquiam School District can get prepared for the upcoming school year Monday at the district’s second annual back-to-school kickoff and community day event.

“This event starts with a march through Hoquiam neighborhoods with staff, students, parents and our Hoquiam High School marching band,” said Angela Forkum, sixth-grade math teacher at the middle school.

The parade route stages behind the middle school before setting out at noon and winding its way east, wrapping up at Central Elementary School.

“This takes about a half hour to 45 minutes,” said Forkum.

Each district school will have a booth at Central Elementary with information to help prepare students and parents for the first day of school — scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3.

“The Hoquiam Rotary will be passing out school supplies; our fall sports teams will be represented; the YMCA will be there to organize some games and activities, and of course we will be serving hamburgers,” said Forkum.

About 500 people participated in the event last year, its first, and Forkum is hoping for an even larger turnout Monday.
