Corrections announces fifth COVID-related death of Stafford Creek inmate

For the first time in months, Grays Harbor Public Health reported no new COVID-19 cases on Monday. However, the state Department of Corrections reported a fifth inmate death at Stafford Creek Corrections Center Tuesday.

On the day prior to the no new cases report, Feb. 7, 112 new cases were reported in the county. During the first week of February, 173 new cases have been added to the Grays Harbor pandemic total, which as of Monday stands at 3,186.

According to the Department of Corrections, the individual incarcerated at Stafford Creek “passed away at a community healthcare facility due to COVID-19” Tuesday. Countywide, as of Monday, the death total was 40 and did not reflect the inmate’s death. As of Monday, eight deaths in the county have been reported in the month of February.

As of Feb. 8, Stafford Creek has had 148 COVID-19 cases in the last 30 days among the incarcerated population, according to the Department of Corrections statement. As of Feb. 9, Stafford Creek Corrections Center has a total capacity for 1,942 individuals and a current population of approximately 1,840.

“Today’s death represents the fourteenth COVID-related death of an incarcerated individual in the custody of the Washington State Department of Corrections,” read the statement. “Additionally, two Washington State correctional officers have died of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.”
