Aberdeen man pleads guilty to manslaughter in Junction City shooting death

An Aberdeen man charged in the drug-related shooting death of another man in Junction City June 16 has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and two other charges, according to the Grays Harbor County Prosecutor’s Office.

County Prosecutor Katie Svoboda is recommending a 7½-year sentence for Brayton Jay Pascoe, 26, in the plea agreement entered this week.

Under the agreement, Pascoe agreed to plead guilty to the manslaughter charge, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of heroin with intent to deliver. When released, the plea agreement calls for an additional 18 months community custody. Pascoe’s sentencing is set for Jan. 10.

According to court documents, David Alan Rhodes, 33, was shot multiple times with a .22-caliber revolver by Pascoe in a dispute over a bag of heroin.

Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s deputies were called to an address in the 300 block of Hagara Street in Junction City early the morning of June 16 and discovered Pascoe fleeing the scene. Another deputy contacted a witness who said there was a deceased male at a shop on Hagara. There a deputy found Rhodes lying in a pool of blood. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.

When deputies found Pascoe he said he had been sprayed with bear mace and was taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for treatment. Later, Pascoe said he had been “scouting” Rhodes; Pascoe had a bag of heroin in his lap and would nod off, seeing if he could trust Rhodes not to take it. Pascoe said Rhodes would take the heroin when he nodded off, only to give it back to Pascoe when he awoke. Later, Rhodes sprayed Pascoe with the bear mace. Pascoe pulled the revolver, the two struggled, and Pascoe fired several shots before fleeing the scene, according to court documents.

During the initial investigation, Pascoe admitted to dealing drugs, and showed investigators where he had dropped the handgun used in the shooting, and a safe in the shop containing heroin, methamphetamine and cash. Earlier, investigators had found a half-sized sandwich bag of heroin near where Pascoe had been first encountered by deputies.

The plea agreement also states financial obligations for Pascoe, including a mandatory victim/witness assessment of $500 and restitution to be paid to an individual on behalf of Rhodes, with the amount to be determined.
