Paddling the Shores

The annual Paddle the Shores event on Saturday brought competitors from as far away as the Seattle area.

Bob Rhoades won both the 2-mile and 6-mile races in his sit-on-top rowing craft. Lisa Griebel was the lone entry in the stand-up paddleboard race. (She won.)

The “Bumper Boat,” captained by Demetri Bolanos of Seattle, won the cardboard boat race. Both four-person teams managed to get their creations all the way around the buoy and back to shore — but the “Bumper Boat” was still dry inside, while the “Yar” was in need of a bilge pump when it returned with its captain, Kennedy Birley of Lacey.

Ocean Shore Fire Captain Mike Thuirer was a very good sport, braving the dunk tank — which ended up dumping him into the water through malfunction almost as many times as by people hitting the target. His firefighters and several others lined up to take their shots, with donations going to North Beach Medical Equipment and the Ocean Shores VFW.
