Aberdeen Sears spared closure … for now

One Washington Sears store in Tacoma is among the nearly 70 set to shut down in September

The Aberdeen Sears store at the Shoppes at Riverside has been spared closure.

Sears Holdings announced it was shuttering 72 Sears and Kmart stores Thursday morning, and provided a shorter list a few hours later. One Washington store, on South Steele Street in Tacoma, is among those on the 63 K-Mart and Sears closure list that will be closed in early September.

According to the Sears Holdings statement, “a small group of stores was pulled from the closing list of 72 stores on May 31 as they are being evaluated further.” No word as to whether or not the Aberdeen location was among those under re-evaluation, but the company said in the statement, “This list will be updated as appropriate.”

The statement continues, “As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline the company’s operations and focus on our best stores, we have identified approximately 100 non‐profitable stores, many of which will begin store closing sales in the near future. We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which are a critical component in our transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed and as warranted.

The closures are part of the company’s reaction to several years of corporate losses, most recently a $424 million loss in the first quarter of 2018, which ended May 5.
