Aberdeen 6, Tumwater 1
The third time was the charm for Aberdeen with a 6-1 victory over Tumwater on Friday in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (15-2 overall, 10-2 2A Evergreen) beat the Thunderbirds (12-3, 10-2) for the first time in three tries this season by getting something that largely escaped them in their two previous losses to their league rival: Timely hits.
Aberdeen got on the board when third baseman Britten Neal scored on a single by first baseman Maysinn Jones in the bottom of the first inning.
In the second inning, Bobcats right fielder and First Team all-league candidate Scotlyn Lecomte made her mark by lacing an Ella Ferguson pitch down the right-field line. T-Birds right fielder Erika Schock attempted to make a diving catch but missed, allowing the ball to roll all the way to the corner of the fence in foul ground.
By the time Schock got the ball ball to make a relay throw, the speedy Lecomte – who is second on the team with a .481 batting average and leads the Bobcats with 28 runs scored and 19 stolen bases – was just a few feet from third base and would score standing up for an electric two-run, inside-the-park home run and a 3-0 lead.
Aberdeen would add three more runs in the sixth, with shortstop Zoe Vessey scoring on an error followed by a Neal groundout to drive in left fielder Audree Gaddis.
Bobcats pitcher Lilly Camp then doubled to drive in Lecomte for a 6-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Camp, who continues to make a claim as the best pitcher in the 2A class this season with another sparkling outing.
The ace right-hander allowed just one earned run on three hits with a walk in seven innings pitched.
Of the 21 outs Camp recorded in the game, 18 were via the strikeout, bringing her season record to 14-2 with a 0.48 ERA and a staggering 202 strikeouts.
Lecomte and star catcher Alyssa Yakovich (.519) had two hits apiece to lead the Bobcats offense.
With the win, the two teams are tied fro the top spot in the 2A Evergreen Conference, with Tumwater holding the tiebreaker after winning 2 of 3 games from the Bobcats in league play.
Aberdeen faces Centralia at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in Aberdeen.
