YAKIMA — Hoquiam found life with like-sized schools more to its liking after using a big third quarter to roll past Bellevue Christian in the second day of the Yakima SunDome Invitational on Friday.

Jack Adams III led all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies (6-5), with Jace Varner adding 12 points and five assists and Anthony Nash pulling in eight rebounds.

Leading by one at the half, Hoquiam ran away with a 21-7 third quarter that featured a tighter defense and a smoother offense than against Class 3A Kennewick on Thursday.

“Our defense stepped up; we didn’t have any second quarter like we did against Kennewick,” HHS head coach Curtis Eccles said. “We hit some shots and grew a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter. This is a good win. We do well within our own classification.”

After the game, Eccles and the team learned Adams was one of four seniors out of the teams in the two-day showcase to earn a scholarship from tournament organizers.

On Tuesday, Hoquiam travels to Tenino.

Hyaks 63, Scorpions 48

OYEHUT — North Beach found the key to unlocking Sands’ pressure defense and took off for a win on the second day of the Holiday With The Hyaks on Friday.

Tim Johnson led all scorers with 32 points, nine rebounds and six steals for the Hyaks (2-8), with Rodney Washington adding six points and nine rebounds. Washington was cited for his rebounding against the British Columbia school.

“We did a much better job of taking care of the ball,” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “We handled their press and recognized their double teams to find the open man. We also played better defensively.”

On Thursday, North Beach visits South Bend.

Bears 80, Chitwhins 72

OYEHUT — On the second day of the Holiday With The Hyaks, Chief Kitsap got hot from the perimeter and Taholah couldn’t find a way to cool it off for the Chitwhins’ first loss of the season on Friday.

Taholah led 57-54 after three quarters, but couldn’t match Chief Kitsap’s shooting from the perimeter. The Bears nailed four treys to the Chitwhins’ one in the frame.

“We went cold and we weren’t getting out on their shooters,” Taholah head coach Mike Rose said. “They got hot and our defense didn’t match.”

Zach Cain led the Chitwhins with a double-double — 20 points, 10 rebounds and five steals — with Brett Orozco leading the team in scoring with 22 points, four assists and five steals.

On Tuesday, Taholah begins Coastal 1B League play vs. Oakville.

Helen Garman led the Hyaks (6-3) with a double-double — 15 points and 11 rebounds. North Beach held Class 1A Forks to single-digit scoring, including a three-point third quarter, on defense.

“This was one of our better defensive games of the year,” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “Hannah Avery did a very good defensive job on their point guard, Rian Peters. Overall, the girls are playing better defense and spreading the ball around better on offense.”

Kodiaks 67, Chokers 63

COUER d’ALENE, Idaho — Lethbridge College, of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, got the best of Grays Harbor College in a defensive battle on the final day of the North Idaho CDA INN-vitational on Friday.

The Kodiaks slowly got a lead from the Chokers late in the first half and used a game-ending 11-0 run to close out this tightly contested game. GHC led 63-61 with two minutes left, but had to erase a 14-point deficit to get there.

“I’m proud of the guys; they played hard,” GHC head coach Alonzo Cole said. “We just couldn’t finish the final two minutes. We didn’t move around enough to get to the open spot, but that’s just some of the small things we need to work on. I’m proud of the way they played.”

John Robinson led GHC (4-11) with 17 points, with Jacob Rainey adding 10 points and five rebounds.

On Jan. 11, GHC begins NWAC Western Division play at Tacoma.
