South Bend approves bond to fund replacement elementary school

The South Bend School District has now fully funded a replacement to Chauncey Davis Elementary School, after an overwhelming majority voted in favor of a new $4.95 million bond to complete funding for the new school.

The final vote was 74.91 percent in favor of the school, with 439 votes approving and 147 against by the end of the election Tuesday night, a 40.11-percent voter turnout.

The current building for Chauncey Davis is almost 70 years old, and a recent state study gave the facility a “poor” rating for its infrastructure and other aspects.

The state Legislature allocated over $11 million in capital funding to build the new school, and with the bond money the district can fully fund the construction.

The bond is expected to add an additional $1.81 per $1,000 in assessed property values for district residents.

The new building will go up behind the current elementary school, and would not require students to use temporary portable classrooms.
