Prep Baseball Roundup: Montesano sweeps twin bill from Elma

Montesano swept a doubleheader in Elma as we review a busy prep baseball Tuesday on the Harbor.

Montesano 8, Elma 2
Montesano defeated Elma 8-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Elma.
The Bulldogs (6-0 overall, 2-0 1A Evergreen) struck first with a run on a Toren Crites single in the top of the first and added three runs in the second, two on a single by second baseman Zach Timmons.
The Eagles (2-4, 2-3) responded with a run in the second when third baseman Bryston Crawford scored on an error.
Monte added two more in the top of the third on a bases-loaded walk to Kolson Hendrickson and an error.
Crawford cut the deficit to 6-2 when he singled to drive in outfielder Isaac McGaffey in the bottom of the fourth, but Monte runs on a Kole Kjesbu single in the sixth and a Colton Grubb sacrifice fly in the seventh put Monte up 8-2.
Hendrickson allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in five innings pitched. Brody Williamsen gave up a hit with one strikeout in two innings of scoreless relief for the Bulldogs.
Troy Rupe took the loss for Elma, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 2 2-3 innings pitched.
Hunter Young allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks with a strikeout in 4 1-3 innings of relief for Elma.

Montesano 9, Elma 3
Montesano completed the sweep with a 9-3 win over Elma in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Elma.
The Bulldogs got a run on a Colton Grubb RBI single in the first and added four runs in the second, capped by a three-run home run off the bat of infielder Zach Timmons.
A Mason Fry sacrifice fly in the third scored Brody Williamsen followed by two runs in the fourth on a Colton Grubb double and a Toren Crites RBI ground out.
The Eagles broke the shutout bid with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two on an Isaac McGaffey two-out single.
Monte added an insurance run on a Caden Grubb RBI single in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Caden Grubb allowed two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of scoreless work to earn the win. Krew Messick (IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, K) and Damond Bird (IP, 0R, 0H, BB, K) pitched in relief for Monte.
Blake Benzschawel (3 IP, 6R, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) took the loss for the Eagles while Jamieson Modersohn (3 IP, 3R, 3ER, 5H, K) pitched three innings in relief.
The Bulldogs sit in second place in the 1A Evergreen League, three games behind Rochester in the win column.
Elma sits in third place, 1.5 games behind Montesano.
Both teams are scheduled to face each other at 3 p.m. on Friday at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Rochester 11, Hoquiam 1
Hoquiam dropped the first game of a doubleheader against Rochester 11-1 on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
The Grizzlies (1-7, 1-4) trailed 6-0 after two innings after allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first and four in a second inning that saw the first seven Warriors reach base.
It could have been worse if not for senior second baseman Joey Bozich, who snared a line drive then doubled off Ruger Culp at second base.
Hoquiam pitcher Jaxson Howard followed with a strikeout of Dane Akin to end the frame.
But Hoquiam was unable to find much offense against the Warriors (6-1, 6-0) and starting pitcher Tayden Martin.
Down 9-0, the Grizzlies scored their lone run of the game when Bozich, on board with a one-out single, came in to score on a wild pitch.
Left fielder Dayton Cole had the only other hit against Martin, who also walked two while striking out 11 in the six-inning victory over Hoquiam.
Howard took the loss while Ty Thao (2.1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB) pitched in relief for Hoquiam.

Rochester 11, Hoquiam 0
For the second game on the day, Hoquiam’s offense struggled in an 11-0 loss to Rochester in the nightcap on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
The Grizzlies kept the game close with the Warriors through the first four innings, with Rochester scoring the first run of the game on a double steal against Hoquiam starting pitcher Luke Montoure.
The Warriors added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings and saw Rochester put the game away with six runs in the top of the seventh, capped by a three-run triple from Easton Singleton to put Hoquiam in an 11-0 hole.
The Grizzlies managed just two hits on a double by catcher Ty Thao and a single from outfielder Dayton Cole.
Montoure took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts in six innings of work.
Hoquiam’s Nico Bretz allowed six runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in pitching the seventh inning.
Hoquiam sits in fourth place in the 1A Evergreen League, one game behind Elma.
The Grizzlies play at Rochester at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Aberdeen 10, Shelton 5
Aberdeen pulled away from Shelton in a 10-5 win on Tuesday in Shelton.
The Bobcats (4-1, 2-0 2A Evergreen) led 5-3 over the Highclimbers (4-2, 0-2) heading into the final inning of the game when they made their move.
Aberdeen took control with five runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of outfielder Donovan Hedgpeth and an RBI single by first baseman Mylan Bruner.
Third baseman Gabe Matthews stole home to put Aberdeen up 10-3 heading to the bottom half of the frame.
Bobcats reliever Tyce Greene replaced starter Mason Hill in the seventh and allowed a run on a bases-loaded walk before retiring the side to secure the victory.
Hill earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Eight different Bobcats collected a hit in the game, with center fielder Aidan Baker collecting a triple while Hedgpeth and Matthews each had a double in the game.
With the win, Aberdeen is tied atop the 2A Evergreen Conference standings with Tumwater and W.F. West.
The Bobcats host Shelton at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Pioneer Park.

Raymond-South Bend couldn’t slow down league-leading Ilwaco in an 11-0 loss in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in South Bend.
The Ravens (3-4, 2-2 2B Pacific) trailed 5-0 after three innings and saw the game get away from them as the Fishermen (6-0, 4-0) scored six runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined, capped by a three-run home run by catcher Corbin Johnson to put RSB behind 11-0.
The Ravens were led by catcher Keeton Nichols, who went 2-for-3 with a double.
Edgar Chavez took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Anthony Morris (IP, 4R, 4ER, 5H) pitched in relief for RSB.

Raymond-South Bend dropped the second game of a doubleheader 17-0 to Ilwaco on Tuesday in South Bend.
The Ravens trailed 4-0 after two innings and saw the Fishermen blow the game open with nine runs in the top of the fourth as nine of the first 10 Ilwaco batters in the frame reached base.
Raymond-South Bend’s offense managed just two hits in the game, both singles from shortstop Caiden De Los Santos and outfielder Tyler Tracey.
Keeton Nichols took the loss for RSB, which had four pitchers combine to allow 13 earned runs on 14 hits with seven walks and two strikeouts in the five-inning game.
The Ravens sit in a tie for third place in the 2B Pacific League with North Beach.
RSB plays at Wahkiakum at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley was out of it early in a 13-0 non-league loss to Napavine on Tuesday in Pe Ell.
The Titans (4-3) trailed 5-0 to the Tigers (9-1) after one half-inning of play and were out of it by the fourth inning, trailing 11-0.
Napavine hammered 14 hits against three PWV pitchers while Tigers starter Hudson Chambers allowed just one hit – a single to Titans pitcher Eddie Clements – while walking two and striking out six in four innings of work.
Clements took the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits and three walks in 1 1-3 innings pitched.
Braden Neva (1.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 4H, BB, 2K) and Camden Wetterauer (2 IP, 2R, 2ER, 4H) pitched in relief for PWV.
The Titans host Forks in a doubleheader set to start at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
