Aberdeen places fifth at inaugural state dual championships

The Aberdeen Bobcats placed fifth overall at the inaugural Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association 2A/1A/B Girls Dual State Championships on Saturday at Othello High School.

In the first round, Aberdeen got six pinfall wins en route to a 54-30 victory over Chief Sealth.

Aberdeen jumped out to a big lead with wins in the first five matches, including six-point fall wins from Micah Turpin (100 pounds), Paisley Floch (115) and Xela Kowoosh (120).

After suffering an 81-0 drubbing at the hand of eventual champion Toppenish in the quarterfinals, the Bobcats advanced in the consolation bracket with a 42-39 win over Black Hills.

In the dual with the Wolves, Aberdeen’s Turpin, Floch, Kowoosh, Lander Floch (130) and Kayleen Rouska (140) won head-to-head matches to lead the Bobcats.

Aberdeen finished up its tournament run with a 48-36 victory over Zillah.

Pinfall wins from Kowoosh, Brooklyn Brown (125) and Rouska against Zillah led the Bobcats to the fifth-place finish.

Ihde leads Montesano to top 1o finish at Viking Girls Invitational

Led by Ashley Ihde, the Montesano Bulldogs placed sixth at the Viking Girls Invitational on Saturday at Puyallup High School in Puyallup.

Ihde, a freshman, defeated South Kitsap’s Arielle Neghmouche via 21-5 technical fall to win the 100-pound weight class at the 21-team tournament.

The Bulldogs finished with 90.5 points, 2.5 points behind fifth-place Tenino.

Elma placed 12th overall at the meet with 47.5 points.

The Eagles were led by Felicia MacLean, who placed second in the 130-pound weight class.

Hoquiam takes second at Lumberjill Classic

The Hoquiam Grizzlies finished in second place at the Lumberjill Classic on Saturday at R.A. Long High School in Longview.

Four Grizzlies won their respective weight class to lead the Grizzlies to second place in the 15-team event with 95.5 points.

Hoquiam freshman Taylor Pettit defeated Eatonville’s Harleigh Hemphill via 15-0 technical fall to win the 115-pound weight class.

Grizzlies junior Emily Brodhead defeated Stevenson’s Evelyn McIlwain via fall at 1:18 to win the 130-pound weight class.

Senior Meribel Mazariegos defeated Columbia River’s Aaliyah Booth via fall at 2:46 to win the 155-pound final for the Grizzlies.

Finally, Hoquiam freshman Sophia Barron pinned Winlock’s Eva Ming at 1:05 to win the 190-pound weight class.

Hoquiam’s Yazmin Balagot placed second at 100 pounds as five of six Grizzlies placed on the podium of their respective weight classes.

Stevenson placed first with 114 points while R.A. Long finished behind the Grizzlies in third with 65 points.
