BOYS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 2, Shelton 0

Aberdeen earned its third consecutive shutout victory with a 3-0 win over Shelton on Tuesday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (8-0 overall, 3-0 2A Evergreen) took an early lead when junior midfielder Ricky Granados dropped a ball back to senior defender Cristhian Lopez, who placed a through ball on to the foot of forward Yaonis Chignesse, who beat three Shelton defenders on a 30-yard sprint to score in the second minute.

Aberdeen had multiple chances through the remainder of the first half to add to the lead, with Granados ringing a long, bending shot off the far post just before halftime.

In the second half, the Bobcats doubled the lead when Chignesse threaded a ball to forward Gonzalo Blanes at midfield. Blanes sent a no-look pass ahead to a sprinting Toni Wang up the right side. Wang received the ball in stride and beat the keeper to low to the far post for a 2-0 lead.

The Aberdeen defense held the Highclimbers (1-5-1, 1-2) to three shots on goal and one corner kick in the game while the Bobcats totalled 18 shots on goal.

“An outstanding team effort tonight,” Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming said. “We were combining expertly coming forward, even including our defenders as attackers, and our communication was on point. The boys maintained both their offensive spacing and their defensive shape throughout the match.”

Fleming commended the performances of seniors Ryker Scott and Edgar Ceja, Josh Alcala and Lopez on defense, Granados and Gibran Garcia in the midfield, and Wang off the bench.

The Aberdeen JV team won 3-2 on Tuesday.

Gerardo Servellon scored three goals for the Cats’ JV squad while Wyatt Glaefke and David Santiago “played well,” according to the coaching staff.

The Bobcats sit on top of the 2A Evergreen Conference standings with nine points, two ahead of second-place Tumwater.

Aberdeen takes off for Spring Break and will be back in action on April 14 against Tumwater in Tumwater.

Forks 6, Hoquiam 3

Hoquiam played catch-up all night in a 6-3 loss to Forks on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

The Grizzlies (2-6, 2-5 1A Evergreen) trailed by two goals early to the Spartans (4-3, 4-3) after Forks goals in the 10th and 16th minutes.

Hoquiam would get back in the game when Carlos Lopez was fouled in the box to create a Hoquiam penalty kick.

J.B. Fabian converted the penalty shot to cut the Forks lead in half in the 33rd minute.

Just before halftime, Lopez popped the ball toward the top of the Forks 18-yard box. Alan Torres got to it for a shot over an oncoming Spartans keeper to tie the game in the 40th minute.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Forks held its second two-goal lead with scores in the 45th and 49th minutes.

Michael Garcia would head in a Lopez assist off a corner to make it a one-goal game in the 53rd minute, but Forks would add two more goals down the stretch to hand Hoquiam the loss.

Lopez led the way for the Grizzlies with three assists, drawing praise from head coach Daniel Langer.

“This freshman is on fire and showing everyone that freshman can be just as good as any senior,” he said. “We fought hard tonight and battled. We still haven’t fixed some of the smaller mistakes that lead to big problems though. Tonight was a difficult challenge due to having so many players out with eligibility issues. The JV guys stepped up and showed how they can compete for these starting spots tonight, but this was difficult tonight and the lack of experience in key moments hurt us.”

Hoquiam sits in a tie with Tenino in sixth place in the 1A Evergreen League standings.

The Grizzlies host the Beavers at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
