Ridgefield at Montesano

When and where: 7 p.m. Friday at Jack Rottle Field, Montesano

Players to watch: Montesano – Tyson Perry QB/DB, Kole Kjesbu REC/LB, Terek Gunter RB/DB, Mason Fry REC/DL. Ridgefield – Landon DeBeaumont QB, Ty Rogers REC, Brian McLemore III REC.

When Montesano hosts Ridgefield in the Bulldogs’ home-opener on Friday, it will be a tale of two teams at the opposite ends of late-game heroics in Week 1.

Monte dug deep to pull itself out of a two-score deficit with a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback that culminated in defensive lineman Mason Fry blocking a last-second field goal attempt to secure the win.

The Bulldogs overcame La Center by making big plays down the stretch, including a late long touchdown pass from quarterback Tyson Perry to running back Terek Gunter that staked Monte to the late lead.

This all after Monte struggled on offense against a physical Wildcats defense, being shutout through three quarters of the game.

While Monte was celebrating a thrilling comeback win in walk-off fashion, Ridgefield found itself on the other end of the excitement spectrum.

Locked in a close, high-scoring affair against Prairie, Ridgefield trailed by eight with under a minute to play until Brian McLemore III caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Landon DeBeaumont with 40 seconds on the clock.

But a chance to tie the game with a two-point conversion was thwarted when a DeBeaumont slant pass was turned away the the Prairie defense, leaving the Spudders at the bottom end of the rollercoaster of emotions.

Ridgefield amassed over 400 yards of offense in the loss, 259 of those coming from the arm of DeBeaumont, who completed 15 of his 22 pass attempts.

Steliacoom at Aberdeen

When and where: 7 p.m. Friday at Stewart Field, Aberdeen

Players to watch: Steliacoom – Titus Kaeka QB, Noah Maxwell WR/FS, Xander Shaw TE/DE. Aberdeen – Micah Schroeder RB/LB, Riley Wixson FB/LB, Mason Hill QB, Adonis Hammonds WR/DB.

Aberdeen should be charged up in front of a homecoming crowd against Steliacoom on Friday.

The Bobcats are coming off a gritty win over Olympic in the first week of the season, one in which the Bobcats lost an early two-score lead only to win the fourth quarter.

Aberdeen’s defense stepped up late with two interceptions in the final period – one by Micah Schroeder and another by Sam Schreiber – to leave Bremerton with the victory.

The Bobcats will likely need to muster up more of that moxie against a Steliacoom team coming off a 19-0 shutout win over Bremerton.

In that game, the Sentinels threw the ball 26 times to just 15 rushing attempts and were led by junior quarterback Titus Kaeka, who completed 17 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

Kaeka spread the wealth around with five different receivers catching at least two passes for Steliacoom.

A good tackling team, the Sentinels defense held Bremerton to 221 total yards of offense, forced three turnovers and were led by defensive end Xander Shaw with three sacks.

Aberdeen totaled 312 yards of offensive in Week 1, led by junior quarterback Mason Hill (17-20, 145 yards) and Schroeder, who rushed for 83 yards on 19 carries (4.4 yards per carry).

Stevenson at Elma

When and where: 7 p.m. Friday at Davis Field, Elma

Players to watch: Elma – Isaac McGaffey QB/S, Colt Landstrom RB/DB, Dayton Brookins WR/CB, Kolby Rademacher RB/LB. Stevenson – Jude Travinski QB, Skylar Polzel RB/LB, Logan Polzel TE/LB.

Elma should be in good position to remain unbeaten on the season when it hosts Stevenson on Friday.

The Eagles are coming off a 41-28 win over Centralia that saw Elma rack up 380 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Isaac McGaffey led the way with 311 all-purpose yards (266 passing, 55 rushing) and accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) while Colt Landstrom’s 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown sparked the Eagles in the second half.

Elma’s offense should find success against a young, inexperienced Stevenson team that allowed four touchdown receptions in a 40-24 loss to Hudson’s Bay in Week 1.

Similar to McGaffey, Stevenson junior quarterback Jude Travinski is a three-sport standout who was a state qualifier at 100 meters last spring and averaged 19.1 points per game for the Bulldogs basketball team last season.

The game could turn into a high-scoring affair, with Elma’s wealth of offensive weapons being too much for Stevenson to handle.

King’s Way Christian at Hoquiam

When and where: 7 p.m. Friday at Olympic Stadium

Players to watch: Hoquiam – K.J. McCoy QB, Joey Bozich WR/LB, Kingston Case RB/DB, Ryan Pullar OL/DL. KWC – Owen Paulsen QB, Colin Hermes REC, Rylan Richter REC.

Hoquiam won its season-opener for the first time since 2019 with last week’s 54-14 win over Columbia (White Salmon) and will look to carry that momentum in the Grizzlies’ home-opener on Friday against King’s Way Christian.

The K.J. McCoy era of Hoquiam football began with a bang as the freshman quarterback played the role of game manager, completing 8-of-11 passes for 165 yards and impressing coaches with poise unbecoming of most 14-year-old varsity players.

It helped that running back Kingston Case continued to prove himself as a tough, elusive runner after gaining 161 yards on just 13 carries in the victory.

Against King’s Way Christian, the Grizzlies face a team that was rocked by Rochester’s power-running game in a 48-28 Week 1 loss.

The Knights trailed 28-0 at the half and 41-7 after three quarters as the defense struggled to slow down the Warriors ground game, which had three runners combine to rush for over 350 yards.

Quarterback Owen Paulsen led the Knights, completing 14-of-26 passes for 254 yards, with four different receivers recording three receptions apiece.

Raymond-South Bend at Rainier

When and where: 7 p.m. Friday at Rainier High School

Players to watch: Chris Banker RB/LB, Manny Souza RB/DB, Angel Morales QB/DB, Adam Mora WR/DB/K. Rainier – Dorien Cano RB/LB, Jayden Alegarbes RB/DB.

Raymond-South Bend had little troubles in a season-opening victory over Mossyrock last week and looks to move to 2-0 when the Ravens face Rainier on Friday.

RSB had 400 yards of offense in the 43-8 win, led by senior running back Chris Banker, who rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns.

Junior Manny Souza added 87 yards on nine carries as the Ravens ran for 345 yards in the game.

Raymond-South Bend’s running game could find success against a Rainier team that had seven turnovers, including six lost fumbles, in a 40-0 loss to Tenino last week.

The Mountaineers are a new-look team this season after graduating three of its top players, including their multi-year starting quarterback and running back, and plan on giving snaps in its non-league games to different underclassmen vying for the starting quarterback position.

That should be good news for a Ravens teams that has a more established starting lineup at this point of the season.

Blaine at Pe Ell-Willapa Valley

When and where: 1 p.m. Saturday at Pe Ell

Players to watch: PWV – Brody Ritzman QB/DB, Blane King WR/DB, Lucas Lusk RB/LB, Spud Swogger RB/LB. Blaine – Connor Brown QB, Kai Kerwin WR/CB, Peyton Bouma REC.

Coming off a rout of a 2A-class team a week ago, the Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans punch up once again when they take on the 1A-class Blaine Borderites on Saturday in Pe Ell.

PWV smacked Evergreen (Seattle) for a 41-0 lead by halftime as the Titans’ speed exposed the bigger, but slower Wolverines.

Running back Lucas Lusk and company had their way with over 232 rushing yards, most of that on sweeps around the edges of the defense.

Blane King led the way with 95 yards on just four carries and the Titans defense didn’t allow a point until midway through the fourth quarter, when the PWV reserves were in the game.

The Borderites weren’t as fortunate in Week 1, suffering a 55-21 loss to Renton in its season-opener.

A young Blaine squad traded touchdowns with the Red Hawks throughout much of the first half, but Renton ran off six straight touchdowns to take control of the game.

Blaine sophomore quarterback Connor Brown completed 16-of-34 passes for 214 yards, his favorite targets being receivers Peyton Bouma and Kai Kerwin, each of whom had at least 100 yards receiving in the loss.
