The spring prep sports season kicked off on Saturday with Twin Harbors boys soccer teams in action.

Capital 2, Aberdeen 0

Aberdeen failed to score in dropping its season-opener 2-0 to Capital on Saturday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (0-1 overall) had its chances against the 3A-class Cougars (1-0), including a breakaway attempt by junior forward Evan Cone that was saved by the Capital keeper in the first half.

Capital took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Emiliano Palma Perales scored on an angled shot near the endline in the 53rd minute.

The Cougars doubled their lead when sophomore midfielder Tanner Fricke hit a shot that deflected off a Bobcats defender and went in 64 minutes into the game.

“Our boys gave a lot of effort and held up well in a very physical match,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Game could have went either way and it was a good test for an opening match versus a solid opponent.”

Fleming cited the play of defenders Isaiah Johnson, Chris Garcia, Angel Espinosa and Javier Lagunas.

Aberdeen hosts Hoquiam at 6 p.m. on Monday.

The Aberdeen junior varsity team tied 0-0 against Capital JV on Saturday.

Aberdeen coaches commended the performances of Bobcats Ryker Scott, Ricky Granados, Ethan Parris and Josh Alcala.

Wahluke 3, Montesano 2

Montesano couldn’t hold on to an early lead in a 3-2 season-opening loss to Wahluke on Saturday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (0-1) started red hot, scoring in the opening minutes when junior forward Felix Romero put one across the line off an assist from midfielder Cris Tobar.

Monte took a 2-0 lead when Tobar converted a penalty kick just nine minutes into the game.

But just a few minutes later, Wahluke (1-0) scored on a penalty-kick goal and tied the game with a goal in the 20th minute.

With the game tied at 2-2 at halftime, Wahluke took the lead for good on a free-kick goal in the 59th minute.

Montesano managed just one shot on-target the rest of the way to suffer the 3-2 loss.

The Bulldogs had seven shots in the game – four on-target – while Wahluke had five shots with three on-target.

Monte hosts Eatonville in a 1A Evergreen League game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
