Hoquiam and Willapa Valley split a pair of basketball games as we review Saturday’s local sports.
GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Hoquiam 42, Willapa Valley 35
Twenty-four hours after opening the season with a victory over Elma, the Hoquiam Grizzlies defeated the Willapa Valley Vikings 42-35 on Saturday in Menlo.
The Grizzlies (2-0 overall, 1-0 1A Evergreen) trailed by seven at the half after struggling to score in over the first two quarters, scoring just seven and five points in the first and second frames, respectively.
But the second half belonged to Hoquiam as the Grizzlies outscored Willapa Valley (2-1, 2-0 1B Columbia Valley) 15-2 in the third quarter.
“It was a tale of two halves,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “I don’t know what we did at halftime, but we’re not going to do that anymore. We looked very disinterested.”
Hoquiam held a 32-23 lead with six minutes left in the game when Willapa Valley began a comeback, using a 2-3 zone defense to lead to a 9-0 run to tie the game with 3:27 left.
But Hoquiam had an answer when the Vikings pushed for the lead, hitting four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter when the Vikings threatened to keep Willapa Valley at arm’s length over the final few minutes of the game.
Charli Sampson-Eastman led Hoquiam with 12 points.
The Grizzlies had balanced scoring, with Sharaya Brydon (9 points), Sadie Carlyle (8 pts.) and Chloe Kennedy (7 pts.) scoring multiple baskets for Hoquiam.
Lauryn McGough led Willapa Valley with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Cami Swarts added 10 points for the Vikings.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Willapa Valley 67, Hoquiam 43
Willapa Valley dominated the fourth quarter en route to a 67-43 win over Hoquiam on Saturday in Menlo.
In a close game that saw neither team outscore the other by more than two points through the first three quarters, the Vikings put the game out of reach with a 28-3 fourth quarter performance.
Tyler Adkins led the Vikings with 20 points, 18 of those in the second half.
Willapa Valley’s Beau Buchanan was a force in the middle for the Vikings, scoring 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds. The senior center also had eight blocks in the game, manning the middle and allowing his teammates to extend out defensively and challenge Hoquiam’s dangerous perimeter shooters.
Gavin Hampton added 14 points for Willapa Valley (3-0, 1-0 1B Columbia Valley).
Dane McMillan led Hoquiam (1-1, 1-0 1A Evergreen) with 17 points with Michael Lorton-Watkins adding 10 points for the Grizzlies.

Tacoma 8, Grays Harbor 5
Grays Harbor College dropped the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday to Tacoma 8-5 in Tacoma.
The Chokers (6-14 overall, NWAC West) trailed 4-1 after four innings but rallied to cut Tacoma’s lead to 5-4 on Montesano product Aaron Lano’s RBI single in the sixth followed by two runs in the seventh on a Preston Vine run-scoring single followed by a balk that scored Chase Cleveringa.
But Tacoma responded with four runs over the final three innings to match Grays Harbor and emerge with the 8-5 win.
Tacoma out hit the Chokers 8-6 in the game.
Cleveringa led Grays Harbor with a 2-for-4 game that included a double and two runs scored.
Alex Carrillo (1-4, R, SB, RBI), Preston Vine (1-5, RBI), and Lano (1-3, RBI) also collected base hits for GHC.
Trevor Barth took the loss for Grays Harbor, allowing five earned runs on five hits, three walks and two strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings pitched.

Grays Harbor pitching allowed 13 runs over the first three innings en route to a 14-4 loss in the night cap of a doubleheader on Saturday in Tacoma.
Tacoma (18-4) scored six in the first and third innings sandwiched around a run in the second to take command of the game early on.
Tacoma had 12 hits in the five-inning game.
In the top of the fourth, the Chokers scored four runs on an RBI single from Elma’s Tysen Richardson, a wild pitch, a Caleb Berry RBI single scoring Richardson and a Colin Hoover sacrifice fly that scored Montesano’s Aaron Lano for an unearned run.
Tacoma scratched across a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Josh Trujillo single and held the Chokers scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the game via 10-run rule.
Richardson (1-1, R, RBI) and Berry (1-2, RBI) had the only hits for Grays Harbor in the game.
Luke Stutesman took the loss for the Chokers, allowing six earned runs on four hits and two walks while getting just one out in the first inning.
Montesano graduate Cole Daniels allowed four earned runs on two hits and four walks in 1 2-3 innings of relief.
Alex Carrillo (2IP, 6H, 3ER, 2K, BB) threw the final two innings for Grays Harbor.

Grays Harbor College fell to Tacoma for the third straight game, losing 13-3 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday in Hoquiam.
Grays Harbor struggled to slow Tacoma’s high-powered offense as the Titans scored runs in four of the first five innings and put the game away with five runs in the top of the eighth inning.
The Chokers scored their three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double from Aidan McMurdo and a two-run single by Cameron Denny.
Grays Harbor had 10 hits in the game, led by McMurdo, who was the only Choker with multiple hits in the game, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Grays Harbor pitcher Colin Hoover took the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits with two walks in four innings pitched.

Tacoma completed a four-game, weekend-series sweep over Grays Harbor by handing the Chokers a 4-2 seven-inning loss in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Titans scored three runs on two RBI singles and added an insurance run in the sixth on a Jackson Vandebrake double.
Grays Harbor responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Montesano’s Aaron Lano scoring a run on a wild pitch, but couldn’t complete the comeback in the 4-2 loss.
Lano led the Chokers, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Cameron Denny went 1-for-4 with an RBI single for GHC.
Grays Harbor starting pitcher Tyler Garcia allowed no runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in a no-decision performance.

PREP GIRLS GOLF
Aberdeen places seventh at districts
Led by a fourth-place finish from Britt Rajcich, the Aberdeen girls golf team finished in seventh place at the 2A District 4 Girls Golf Tournament last week in Tumwater.
Rajcich finished with a two-day, 36-hole total score of 173, placing fourth overall in the tournament and scoring 38 points for Aberdeen.
All four Bobcats golfers made the cut after the first day of competition on Thursday.
Alice Earley (231, 33rd), Saylor Heikkila (234, 34th) and Katilyn McCracken (244, 37th) rounded out Aberdeen’s overall team score of 58 points.
Woodland won the district title with 141 points with Tumwater (124) and Columbia River (108) placing second and third, respectively.
Tumwater’s Lily McCauley won the district title with a total score of 146.
Woodland’s Rayleah Trice (165) and Columbia River’s Karlyn Gomez (167) placed second and third, respectively.
