Montesano trounces Forks to finish unbeaten in league baseball

MONTESANO — Montesano finished an undefeated league campaign with a win over Forks in an Evergreen 1A League game at Vessey Field on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (12-0, 12-3) were able to get clutch singles from Matt Plato and Teegan Zillyett in the second inning to rally for five runs. Montesano stayed in control from there on out behind the pitching performances of Dakoyta Reninger, Evan Bates and Zillyett. The trio allowed just one hit in the contest.

“(An undefeated league season) was a team goal for the year,” Montesano head coach Mike Osgood said. “To be able to keep focus in the cages and get the work down, the kids were able to keep positive attitudes and keep working hard and accomplish their goal.”

Montesano will open District IV tournament play against White Salmon at Olympic Stadium on Monday.

Titans split

ADNA — Pe Ell-Willapa Valley made sure to get into the district tournament bracket on Saturday by knocking off Northwest Christian, 9-2, in a district play-in game.

The Titans then took on Adna, the No. 2 seed out of the Central 2B League, in the district opening round and fell, 13-0, in five innings.

Further details were not reported.

PWV will return to action on Tuesday at 1 p.m. when it will face Ocosta in a loser-out game at Adna.

Centralia Freshman Invite

CENTRALIA — Elma’s Cody Vollan and Jillian Bieker won two events apiece in the Centralia Freshman Invitational on Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

Vollan captured the boys 200 meters, with a time of 23.59, and the 400 meters in 52.93.

Bieker was a double victor in the girls hurdles. She took the 100 hurdles in 17.15 and decisively captured the 300 hurdles in 48.26.

Aberdeen’s Patricia Bates threw 95-10 to win the girls dicus. Hoquiam’s Taylor Strom prevailed in the girls javelin in 88-9 1/2.

North Beach’s Lorin Cox edged Bieker to take the girls long jump with a personal-best mark of 14-11.

Montesano did not have any champions, but Bulldog girls coach Doug Schupbach was pleased with his team’s showing.

“We had a lot of PRs for our freshmen and the sun helped us out,” Schupbach said.

Aberdeen’s Sidor wins

TUMWATER — Aberdeen’s Bryan Sidor won the boys 400 meters at the 53rd annual Shaner Invitational on Friday night at Tumwater High School.

Sidor was clocked in 51.19. North Thurston’s Ross Sherrer was second in 51.45.

The Aberdeen junior was was third in the 200 meters, with a time of 23.55.

Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas registered top-six finishes in three events. She was second in the girls 400 meters in 59.96, trailing Northwest Christian’s Megan McSheffrey by about a half-second. Cardenas was fifth in the 200 (26.84) and sixth in the 100 (13.4).

Bobcat senior Braden Castleberry-Taylor established a personal best of 46-6 1/2 to finish second in the boys shot put. Black Hills’ Austin Daisa won it in 48-1.

Aberdeen’s Jeshua Manwell was fifth in the boys triple jump in 41-3.
