Tuesday Prep Roundup: Ocosta, PWV advance to 2B district semis

Wildcats blank Toutle Lake; Titans rout Onalaska

The Ocosta and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley softball teams advanced to the semifinal round of the 2B District 4 Tournament with wins on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Ocosta 3, Toutle Lake 0

Ocosta freshman Annika Hollingsworth was dominant in leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory over Toutle Lake in a 2B District 4 Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday in Westport.

Hollingsworth held the Ducks scoreless in throwing a three-hit, complete-game shutout, walking one while fanning 12. Sixty-five of the right-hander’s 90 pitches were strikes.

“The game plan was to keep it low, keep it outside and keep them off-balance,” Ocosta head coach Jason Barnum said of the pitching strategy entering the game. “We had to keep the ball low and hit our spots and (Hollingsworth) was just money. She hit her spots the whole game.”

Ocosta’s offense scored its three runs in three separate innings against Toutle Lake ace Jasmine Smith.

Ronnie Graham led off the bottom of the first with a double and later scored on a steal of home for a 1-0 lead.

Graham figured into Ocosta’s second run of the game as well. Aboard with a one-out single, Graham came around to score on an RBI single from Lillyan Barnum in the third.

In the sixth inning, Trinity White gave Ocosta a 3-0 lead with a run-scoring single that drove home Ryann Raffelson, who was aboard with a double.

“We got great run support,” Coach Barnum said. “We made contact all day and put the ball in play.”

Graham (2-3, 2B, 2R) and Jessie Gilbert (2-3, 2B) had multiple hits for Ocosta, which totalled eight hits as a team in the ballgame.

Ocosta (12-3 overall) will play the defending state champion Adna in a semifinal at 4 p.m. on Friday in Adna.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 15, Onalaska 0

The Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans smashed 12 hits en route to a 15-0 three-inning victory in a 2B District 4 Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday in Pe Ell.

PWV (15-0 overall) scored 14 runs in the first inning — including a three-run home run from pitcher Olivia Matlock — to put any thoughts of an Onalaska upset to bed early.

Six Titans had multi-hit games for a PWV offense that is averaging 12.6 runs per game and sports a .534 team batting average.

Merissa Frasier (3-3), Annika Mason (2-2, 2B, 2RBI), Grace Huber (2-2, 2B, 2R, 3RBI), Payton Peterson (2-2, 3B, R, 2RBI) and Matlock (2-2, 3R-HR, 2R, 3RBI) powered the Titans’ offensive surge.

Matlock allowed just three hits and struck out four in the three-inning game while the Titans defense committed just one error in the game.

“We are playing all-around good softball right now,” PWV head coach Ken Olson said, adding his team is so locked in that it is increasingly self-sufficient at this point of the season. “I don’t have to do a lot of coaching right now.”

PWV advances to Friday’s semifinal round, where they will host Forks at 4 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Tumwater 3, Aberdeen 0

In what was described as a “very physical match,” the Aberdeen Bobcats fell to the Tumwater Thunderbirds 3-0 in a battle of two teams tied atop the 2A Evergreen League standings on Tuesday in Tumwater.

Aberdeen (5-4 overall, 4-1 2A Evergreen) fell behind in the first half as Tumwater was awarded a penalty kick on a controversial call.

After the half, the Thunderbirds (7-0, 5-0) scored in the 50th minute and put the game away with a goal in the final minutes of the game on a shot from distance.

““Our effort was good and we created some great opportunities that we just didn’t take advantage of,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “If we play a little better defensively and control the ball a little stronger up the field then the outcome would have been very different.”

Senior goalkeeper Griffin Kincaid, senior defender AJ Sanchez, senior Tony Hernandez, Edwin Quintana and Julian Garcia were cited by Fleming for a solid effort.

Aberdeen takes on Centralia on Thursday at Stewart Field in a Senior Night contest scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Bobcats have locked up the league’s No. 2 seed heading into the district tournament, where they will host a game at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Stewart Field.

Aberdeen JV won 5-4 on Tuesday. Daniel Guzman scored two goals with Juan Guzman, Ruben Oropeza and Antonio Granados scoring one each for the Bobcats.

Seton Catholic scored five goals in the first half and dominated Montesano (4-8 overall) from start to finish, out shooting the Bulldogs 16-2 in the contest.

“They are a very good team; very well coached a lot of skill and play the game really well,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said of Seton Catholic’s performance. “Basically, they are a very complete team and we were overpowered with skill.”

Sanchez added he was proud of his team for continuing to play hard despite the lopsided loss.

“They kept fighting all the way through,” he said. “They never gave up.”
