Bobcats win in three

Aberdeen notched its first Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball victory by topping Rochester, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22, on Tuesday at Sam Benn Gym.

With the Bobcats trailing 20-15 in the second set, Emma Krenz came off the bench to serve six consecutive points, including a pair of aces. Aberdeen pulled out that set and maintained the momentum into the third stanza.

“We had a really balanced attack,” Bobcat coach Doug Basler said. “We were passing well, which gave us several options in terms of offense. And we had several girls putting the ball down.”

Malynda Winston led Aberdeen with 11 kills and was also credited with outstanding defense. Kennedy Pruett had seven kills and four blocks for the Bobcats (1-4, 2-8).

Rochester took the JV match in three sets. Aberdeen’s C squad prevailed in two sets.

Aberdeen begins the second half of league play Thursday at Black Hills.

Eagles in five

FORKS — Elma rallied in the fifth set to pull out a 19-25, 25-20, 27-25, 24-26, 15-10, in an Evergreen 1A League match Tuesday at Forks.

Jalyn Sackrider had a strong game for the Eagles with 11 kills and three blocks. Kenna Stoney had 10 kills and 17 digs in a key all-around performance.

Quin Mikel had 14 kills along with 14 digs and Kali Rambo contributed 3 aces and nine digs to help lift her team.

Elma head coach Kendra Henry said she liked the way her team came together after a slow start.

“I’m proud of how well the girls came back and brought up their energy throughout the night and played well together,” she said.

Elma is now 4-0 in league play with a 9-1 record overall. The Eagles travel to Montesano on Thursday.

Grizzlies win in three

Hoquiam made quick work of Tenino, 25-8, 25-10, 25-11, in an Evergreen 1A League contest Tuesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Kamimi Papp delivered a team-high 17 kills, while Karlie Krohn added seven for the Grizzlies (2-2, 5-6). Setter Kacey Pelan dished out 27 assists.

“We were pretty efficient tonight,” Grizzly coach Heather Bozich said. “They sent us a lot of free balls and we did a good job of converting (them).”

Bozich cited Mercedes Pinnell and Elyse Goulet for net play.

The Grizzlies took the JV match in two sets. Hoquiam’s C squad lost to Montesano in two sets.

After drawing the league bye on Thursday, the Grizzlies host Forks next Tuesday.

Wildcats in four

SOUTH BEND — Kaylee Barnum had 18 kills and eight digs as Ocosta remained unbeaten in Pacific League play by outlasting South Bend, 25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, on Tuesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

Emily Snider also contributed to the defensive effort with 11 digs for the Wildcats (4-0, 9-1). Serena Herman also provided some energy off the bench with her strong service game.

Wildcat coach Barbara Rasmus said her team did well when they stuck to the game plan.

“We had some good stats we just missed a lot of serves in the game that we lost,” she said. “We were trying to get fancy with our hits in the third game and it didn’t pay off too well.”

“Our team has been slow to start our matches and tonight was no exception,” South Bend coach Tricia Needham said. “Serving errors and hitting errors really hurt us.”

South Bend’s Riley Hampton was commended for hitting. Needham also credited Livvie Ogilvie for a fine performance in her debut as a middle blocker.

The Indians took the JV match, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12, with Alaitha Markwell and Alise Rohr commended for all-around play. The C teams played to a 1-1 draw.

South Bend (0-3, 2-7) returns to action tonight at Chief Leschi. Ocosta hosts Chief Leschi next Tuesday.

Vikings win in five

ILWACO — Willapa Valley controlled the net during crunch time to edge Ilwaco, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11, in a Pacific League match Tuesday at Ilwaco.

Hallee Layman led the Vikings (2-2, 6-4) with 11 kills and seven blocks. Teammates Olivia Betrozoff, Hannah Cook and Grace Hodel were all credited with solid performances at the net.

“I thought we played the net well, because they had some pretty tall girls,” Viking coach Lori Snodgrass said. “And we served really well tonight. I think we only missed three serves all night.”

Ilwaco took the JV match, 26-24, 20-25, 15-11.

The Vikings host Northwest Christian in a varsity-only match Thursday.

Gulls in three

OYEHUT — Karlee Freeman and Maddi Murray delivered 11 kills apiece as Raymond swept North Beach, 25-8, 25-14, 25-12, in a Pacific League contest Tuesday at Oyehut.

The Gulls (2-1, 7-2) rebounded from a disappointing loss to Life Christian Academy last week.

“We kept our heads into it and played more to our potential,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “I got to play everybody tonight and everybody had at least one kill, which was awesome.”

Destiny Souvannavanh was praised by Swogger for passing.

Mariah Volger had 11 kills for North Beach (1-2, 1-8). Jessie Garman added three kills and eight digs, while Skye Bartell had seven digs for the Hyaks.

Raymond won the JV match in two sets.

The Hyaks return to action Wednesday at Life Christian Academy. Raymond is home against Ilwaco on Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Beavers 3, Grizzlies 1

Hoquiam fell short against Tenino in Evergreen 1A League competition Tuesday at Olympic Stadium despite dominating possession for stretches of the match.

Tenino opened the scoring in the 18th minute and did not let up, scoring again in the 25th minute. Hoquiam showed signs of life right before halftime, however, and cut the lead in half right before halftime with a goal from Sadie Carlyle.

Carlyle scored the team’s only goal when a pass from Maya Jump got past defenders and allowed Carlyle to place her shot past the keeper at the far post.

The Beavers added an insurance goal in the 65th minute to put the game out of reach.

Hoquiam head coach Drew Granneman said things were looking good for his team until Tenino scored its third goal.

“In the first 20 minutes of the half we had great passing combinations and got some great chances on goal,” he said.

Grannerman also highlighted Alyssa Perry, who filled in at goalkeeper and made some big saves.

The Grizzlies (1-3, 4-7) will take on Forks at home on Oct. 17.

Eagles 4, Wildcats 1

WESTPORT — Ocosta improved on a disappointing result in its first match with Life Christian but ultimately fell on Monday at Westport.

The Wildcats, who had been outshot 45-2 in the first match of the season, had plenty of opportunities that went just wide or off the crossbar, and improved to a 28-19 shooting difference in this one.

Life Christian took advantage of some shaky defense for its first goal in the 19th minute when the backs could not clear the ball away from the goal.

Ocosta found an equalizer shortly before halftime when Teal Mitby’s corner kick found the head of Kjirstin Hopfer in the 37th minute.

Life Christian put the game away in the second half, however. The Eagles scored on a hard shot from 15 yards out in the 42nd minute, then added two goals in the 57th and 73rd minutes.

Ocosta keeper Kristi Raffelson had a solid performance in net despite the loss and made 13 saves.

“We showed our improvement in our passing game,” Ocosta coach Mike King said. “Despite a few defensive lapses that allowed them to score, we never let up.”

King cited the midfield play of Hopfer and overall play of Mercedes Denny and Abriana Ness.
