Thursday Prep Roundup: Eagles upend Chehalis in soccer

Elma uses first-half surge to beat Chehalis in soccer

BOYS SOCCER

Eagles 3, Bearcats 1

ELMA — Scoring three times within 10 minutes in the first half, Elma came away with a non-league win at home against Chehalis on Thursday.

Elma had surrendered a goal in the seventh minute when miscommunication between the defenders and the keeper allowed the Bearcats to get on the board early.

The Eagles (1-3) took control of the game starting in the 20th minute when Martin Baltazar beat several defenders on his run towards the goal. Baltazar then assisted on goals in the 27th and 30th minutes that were both scored by Collin Decker-Hicks.

“We moved as a unit and put pressure on them. It was a good first half,” Elma coach Carson Seaberg said. “In the second half, we controlled the ball in the midfield but got a little bit anxious and didn’t utilize team movement as much but this is a good building block game.”

Seaburg mentioned Rodrigo Luna and Carlos Bautista for helping the offense move the ball through the midfield and generating scoring chances.

The Eagles visit Rochester tonight.

Warriors 2, Bulldogs 1

MONTESANO — Rochester scored twice in the second half to edge Montesano in a non-league contest Thursday at Rottle Field.

After connecting on a 30-yard shot in the 50th minute, the Warriors made it 2-0 by scoring off a corner kick with about six minutes remaining.

The Bulldogs applied the pressure in the late going. Jordan King scored from 20 yards out with about three minutes remaining, but Montesano (0-4-1) was unable to deliver the equalizer.

“We did a really good job in the last five minutes, when we got down, to try to get a tie,” Monte coach Rick Denholm said. “But time just ran out.”

He commended King and defenders Tommy Prosch, Sam Borcherding, Derek Malizia and Yemi Idowu for fine play.

The Bulldogs make the short trip to Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.

Raymond meet

RAYMOND — Ilwaco swept team honors in a multi-school meet hosted by Raymond on Thursday.

The Fishermen nipped North Beach, 112-110, in the boys meet. Ilwaco’s girls amassed 143 1/2 points to finish 30 points ahead of runner-up Northwest Christian.

Raymond’s Karlee Freeman swept the girls throws, breaking her own school shot put record with a 42-8 mark and getting off a 155-8 throw in her only legal discus attempt.

Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Sowle, however, outdueled Freeman in the girls 100 meters and also won the high jump, long jump and triple jump.

South Bend swept the boys one-lap races, with Ben Byington taking the 100 in 11.98 and Preston Lawhead doubling in the 200 (25.1) and 400 meters (54.89). Tribe junior Logan Stamos took the boys triple jump (38-0).

North Beach nearly took boys team honors despite winning only three events. Rodney Washington took two of them — the high jump at 6-2 and the long jump at 18 feet. North Beach’s Brendan Chaney and reigning state champion Tawni Blankenship captured the boys and girls pole vaults, while Lorin Cox took the girls 200 meters.

Raymond’s Ricky Robinett established a two-foot personal best by winning the boys shot put at 48-5.
