GIRLS SOCCER

Bobcats 3, Tigers 0

Emmy Walsh scored twice as rapidly improving Aberdeen notched its first league victory by upending Centralia in Evergreen 2A Conference play Thursday night at Stewart Field.

Walsh opened the scoring in the eighth minute when she converted a breakaway off an Abbie Bradt assist. That proved to be the only goal of the first half.

The Bobcats (1-4, 2-6-2) dominated possession in the second half. Only moments after she hit the post, Walsh put in a contested shot in the 56th minute. Skyler Taylor was credited with the assist.

Bailey Green concluded the scoring 10 minutes later by following in an Anna Foss shot and slipping it past the goalkeeper from close range.

Goalkeepers Reagan Glanz and Amiah Leach combined for the shutout for Aberdeen.

“This was a very good performances for the girls in all aspects of the game,” Bobcat coach Larry Fleming said. “They have improved so much and worked so hard in some frustrating losses. They deserved some success.”

In addition to her goalkeeping stint, Leach combined with Nayeli Morris for outstanding defense. Bradt, Elizabeth Martinez and Adrianna Vasquez were also commended for their play.

Aberdeen also won the JV match, 2-1. Nancy Tobar and Azucena Ceja scored for the Bobcats.

The Cats travel to Rochester for a rare Monday night match.

Eagles 2, Grizzlies 1

ELMA —Kayli Johnson and Molly Johnston each scored in the second half as Elma came from behind to defeat Hoquiam at home on Thursday night.

Hoquiam scored the only goal of the first half in the 35th minute, when Sadie Carlyle knocked in the rebound of a Taylor Strom shot.

The second half saw Kayli Johnson get a cross from Molly Johnston before making a touch and drilling it over the keeper’s hands for a goal in the 46th minute. Johnson and Johnston combined for another goal in the 56th minute when an assist from Johnston led to a shot by Johnson, which then ricocheted off Johnston before going in the net.

“The game was a really solid game, it was really back and forth the whole time,” said Elma coach Scott Rockey. “Nobody really had a solid upper hand in the game.”

Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann thought his team wore down a bit in the second half.

“Overall, it was a great performance by everyone on the team,” Grannemann said. He cited goalkeeper Jade Cox for her performance and communication skills.

Rockey noted the play of Kayli Johnson and the defensive play of Rebeka Lensegrav.

“In the first half we were slow, just a little bit off of our game. In the second half we came out and were faster and were able to keep the ball on their side of the field,” Rockey said. “Do that long enough and a goal will come out for you.”

On Tuesday, the Eagles (1-1, 6-3-2) travel to Forks and the Grizzlies (1-1, 2-7-1) will host Tenino.

Bulldogs 13, Spartans 0

MONTESANO — League-leading Montesano trounced undermanned Forks in an Evergreen 1A League contest Thursday at Rottle Field.

The Bulldogs (4-0, 9-1-1) agreed to play the Spartans in what amounted to an eight-on-eight exhibition, with the scoreboard turned off. No statistics were provided.

Bulldog coach Fidel Sanchez cited Forks for its hustle and the Spartan goalkeeper for her performance. He also credited his team with good sportsmanship.

“It was an eight-on-eight scrimmage,” Sanchez said. “The girls did their part. They were a class act, as I expected them to be.”

The Bulldogs draw the league bye Tuesday and host rival Elma on Thursday.

CENTRALIA — Unable to maintain a fast start, Aberdeen couldn’t match Centralia’s defensive effort in the Thursday night matchup at Centralia.

The Tigers won, 25-19, 25-10, 25-14.

“The first game we started out strong, we were moving well and had lots of energy,” Aberdeen coach Doug Basler said. “The first game was a fun game. It was tied 18-18 at one point, then they just strung a bunch together at the end to put us away.”

Basler cited the defensive play of Malynda Winston and Tamara Corona who both had all-around good defensive performances. The Bobcats served well but Basler noted his team had trouble making good passes.

“Centralia played really scrappy defense, we had only 12 kills total on the night,” Basler said. “We weren’t able to put the ball down and put them away. “We couldn’t overpower them and get the ball down.”

Aberdeen (0-4, 1-8) hosts Rochester on Tuesday.

Vikings in three

MENLO — Hannah Cook put down 11 kills as Willapa Valley swept North Beach, 25-10, 25-19, 25-14.

Willapa Valley’s Brooke Friese put all 14 of her serves into play. Raina Jones was cited by Viking coach Lori Snodgrass for net play.

“I think it was a good all-around team win,” Snodgrass said.

The Vikings also took the JV match, 25-5, 25-7.

Both teams return to action Tuesday, with Willapa Valley traveling to Ilwaco and North Beach (1-2, 1-7) hosting Raymond.

AMANDA PARK — Sharpening its play as the match progressed, Lake Quinault downed Wishkah, 25-23, 25-19, 25-10, in a Coastal 1B League contest Thursday at Amanda Park.

“The team started out very shaky,” Quinault coach Sue Kalama said. “(But) we had a lot of good digs, not just one girl.”

She cited the entire team for solid play.

“We came out strong and confident in the first game,” Wishkah coach Darci McMaster said. “As the match went on, we continued to lose confidence and didn’t make the needed adjustments.”

The Elks (4-0, 7-1) travel to Crescent for a non-leaguer Saturday. On Tuesday, the Loggerettes (2-1 in league) hosts Taholah.

YELM — Aberdeen swept Yelm in a non-league match Thursday at Yelm.

Due to transportation difficulties, the Bobcats (7-3) took only seven players for the contest. That eliminated one doubles match.

Aberdeen’s Luis Garcia trounced Tim Hahn in the No. 1 singles match.

“Luis played a solid match from start to finish,” Bobcat coach Andy Duffy said. “(Cody) Sayres and (Aaron) Larson worked well together today (in doubles).”
