Montesano 5, Naches Valley 1

In a game it likely had circled on the schedule for quite some time, Montesano exacted a bit of revenge in Naches.

A few timely hits and some stellar pitching led to the Bulldogs’ 5-1 win over Naches Valley on Saturday in a rematch of the Bulldogs’ gut-wrenching state-semifinal loss a season ago.

The Bulldogs (12-2 overall) tagged Rangers starting pitcher Jasiah Van Doren for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, capped by a Toren Crites RBI double to score Jaxson Wilson for a 2-0 lead.

The Rangers (9-1) got to Monte starting pitcher Cam Taylor for an unearned run in the first on fielder’s choice ground ball, but the senior right-hander struck out Simon Thomson to avoid any further damage.

Monte added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when two runs scored on a Tyson Perry single and an error by Rangers left fielder Jaden Zimmerman, putting the Bulldogs up 4-1.

With two outs and pinch-runner Tucker Eaton at second base, Monte shortstop Bode Poler ripped a double to right field, scoring Eaton to put the Bulldogs up 5-1.

That was more than enough for Monte reliever Skylar Bove, who struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh to earn the save and secure the victory.

Taylor picked up the win, allowing just the one unearned run on four hits and four walks while striking out five in 5 2-3 innings of work.

Bove entered with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the sixth and struck out Naches valley designated hitter Dayne Brownlow to get out of the frame.

Poler led the way at the plate for Montesano, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
