(Aberdeen wins 4-2 on penalty-kicks)

For the second-consecutive season, the Aberdeen Bobcats finish second in the 2A Evergreen Conference after defeating Centralia 1-0 (4-2 on penalty kicks) in the regular-season finale on Thursday in Centralia.

The Bobcats (9-6 overall, 8-4 2A Evergreen) needed a win to secure a share of second place with W.F. West and stay ahead of the Tigers (9-7, 6-6), which entered the contest one game back of Aberdeen.

The Bobcats’ best scoring opportunity of the game came late in the first half when senior forward Annie Troeh sent a well-placed cross to Abby Mainio inside of 10 yards. Mainio hit a hard volley that took a great save from Tigers keeper Braylee Blankenship to keep the game scoreless.

In the second half, Aberdeen midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte blistered a shot that rang off the far post.

Later in the half, Annie Troeh was taken down from behind inside the 18-yard box but no foul was called, keeping the game scoreless into overtime.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the game went to a penalty-kick shootout.

Bobcats Zoe Troeh, Annie Troeh, Mainio and Lecomte converted their penalty-kicks.

Centralia had its first attempt sail over the crossbar, made the next two then had Cats keeper Jaylynn Phimmasone make a diving save to secure the victory.

“It was a very rough game, but the girls kept working and did an outstanding job of taking their penalty kicks,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Jaylynn made a great save in the shootout as well.”

Madison Marlow, Delaney Shoemaker, Lecomte, Lila Ericksen and Arani Torres were commended by Fleming for having “solid games” for the Bobcats.

With the win, Aberdeen finishes in a tie for second place with W.F. West in league play.

Due to a tiebreaker, the Bobcats will enter the 2A District 4 Tournament as the league’s No. 3 seed.

Aberdeen opens tournament play against Ridgefield at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
