Prep Football Roundup: Teams that deal well with wet weather win

Aberdeen and Montesano limit turnovers, mistakes to win in rainy conditions

UPDATE: Information added for Wishkah Valley-Evergreen Lutheran game.

The wet weather was either a blessing or a curse for Twin Harbors prep football teams as we review Week 7 games.

PREP FOOTBALL

Aberdeen 20, Rochester 8

The trend throughout southwest Washington prep football on Friday was turnovers – lots of them – and the team that handled the elements the best would likely escape with a win.

The Aberdeen Bobcats were one of those teams, benefitting from four turnovers in a 20-8 win over Rochester on Friday at Rochester High School.

“The story of the game was holding onto the football. … It was sloppy, but I’ve seen worse,” said Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge after Rochester fumbled the football eight times in the game, losing four of them. “We made very few mistakes and quite honestly, I believe this game was won during practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Our players are focusing more to the details as they are getting a clearer understanding of the impact little things can make during a football game.”

With the weather causing ball-control and footing issues throughout the region, Aberdeen’s focus on the details led to just one turnover – an interception of a Grady Springer pass – and two fumbles which were both recovered by the Bobcats.

Aberdeen (5-2 overall, 3-1 2A Evergreen) also committed just three penalties in the game, meaning the Bobcats didn’t do much in the way of hurting themselves in the matchup for second place in the 2A Evergreen Conference.

The lack of miscues led to an early Bobcats lead as senior running back Aidan Watkins scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter and a 1-yard plunge in the second as the Cats took a 14-8 lead into the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Watkins put the game away with a touchdown from 6-yards out and a 20-8 victory.

Aberdeen’s defense was key to the victory. The Bobcats held Rochester (4-3, 3-1) to 190 total yards of offense – all on the ground – including a paltry 37 yards in the second half.

“Solid defense all night,” Bridge said. “One aspect about running a ball-control offense like Rochester does is they have to be mistake free. They can’t have a guy slip or the ball bouncing on the ground. There’s no room for error. Once you get behind the chains in a ball control offense you’re no longer the master of your destiny. You have to stay a head on the scoreboard and a head of the chains.”

Watkins led the way for the Cats offense, gaining 178 yards and scoring the two touchdowns on his birthday.

Junior tight end Marcus Hale added 77 yards on just seven carries for Aberdeen, which sits in a tie with W.F. West for second place in the league.

Aberdeen hosts W.F. West at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Montesano 57, Hoquiam 0

Third-ranked Montesano had the game well in hand by halftime, defeating Hoquiam 57-0 on Friday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (7-0, 2-0 1A Evergreen) scored four touchdowns in each of the first two quarters to go up 55-0 at the end of the first half, allowing Montesano to play its reserves over the final 24 minutes of the game.

Montesano tallied 410 yards of offense in the game and were led by three different rushers – junior Felix Romero, senior Gabe Bodwell and senior Bode Poler – each of whom rushed for 90 yards or more.

The Bulldogs defense pitched its third-consecutive shutout, holding the Grizzlies to 11 total yards of offense, including negative-42 on the ground.

Monte linebacker Mason Rasmussen had an interception while linebacker Peyton Damasiewicz recovered a fumble.

“We played outstanding defense again,” Monte head coach Terry Jensen said. “We just did a great job in run defense.”

Monte quarterback Tyson Perry threw for 99 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore hit Rasmussen for a 32-yard score in the first quarter and linked up with Poler for a 19-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

It was Poler’s second touchdown of the night as the senior also scored on runs of one and 70 yards, scoring three straight touchdowns in the second frame.

With the game’s outcome no longer in doubt in the second quarter, Jensen sent an all-senior offense onto the field for one drive and had senior quarterback Jaxson Wilson – out with a collarbone injury – take the field for ancknowledgement from the crowd.

Montesano plays at Tenino in a matchup of the 1A Evergreen League’s top two teams at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Hoquiam (1-6, 0-3) hosts Centralia in a non-league matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Tenino 14, Elma 6

The wet weather had an affect on the Elma Eagles in a 14-6 loss to Tenino on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.

The Eagles (4-3, 1-1 1A Evergreen) tied the game at 6-all when senior Jackson Schneider scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.

The game remained tied until the third quarter when Tenino (2-5, 2-1) took a 14-6 lead on a Mikey Vassar 6-yard run and a subsequent two-point conversion.

Elma had its chances to score in the game, but far too many Eagles drives stalled out – as evidenced by just two third-down conversions – and racked up 15 penalties for 127 yards.

“We had our opportunities, we just didn’t capitalize,” Elma co-head coach Casey Doyle said. “A lot of it came down to the conditions. Wet, stormy night on a grass field that was real slippery. A lot of people were running real tentatively because they didn’t want to slip and fall. Throwing around a wet football is not always easy to do. It’s just not as much fun playing in the rain.”

Elma quarterback Carter Studer threw for 200 yards and completed passes to eight different receivers to lead the Eagles, which lost a chance to take sole possession of second place in the 1A Evergreen League with the loss.

“We weren’t able to get our short game going quickly and there were times when we’d march down the field then stall out because we got behind the chains,” Doyle said. “It was a heartbreaking loss.”

Elma has a short turnaround as it will face Eatonville at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Eatonville High School.

Wishkah Valley 42, Evergreen Lutheran 26

Wishkah Valley won for the second time in its past three games with a 42-26 win over Evergreen Lutheran on Saturday at Wishkah Valley High School.

The Loggers (2-4 overall) led 18-0 at halftime and – after the Eagles (1-4) rallied to cut the deficit to 24-20 – had a strong fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Junior running back Aiden Wiedenmann rushed for 231 yards on 13 carries, scoring four rushing touchdowns and also catching a pass for a score to lead the Loggers.

“Aiden ran very well, breaking multiple tackles and has really improved at the position this year,” Loggers head coach Eric Erickson said. “Credit also goes to the offensive line of tight ends Matthew Erickson and Zach Greathouse and center Kohl Brandner for outstanding blocking.”

Erickson had 59 yards rushing and was one of the defensive leaders with six tackles, a sack and two passes defended.

Loggers sophomore quarterback Boady Dhooghe went 7-for-13 for 98 yards and three touchdowns while also recording 10.5 tackles and a pair of interceptions on defense.

Freshman running back Josh Ellis had 52 receiving yards and caught one of Dhooghe’s TD passes.

Wishkah had eight sacks as a team in the game, with Brandner leading the way with five while Wiedenmann had three.

The Loggers face Mary M. Knight at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Mary M. Knight High School.
