GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Montesano 57, Hoquiam 13

Montesano completed its third-consecutive undefeated league season with a 57-13 win over Hoquiam on Thursday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (12-9 overall, 8-0 1A Evergreen) had three players score in double figures and dominated on the defensive end, holding Hoquiam (4-16, 2-6) to no more than four points in any quarter of the game.

Monte led 16-2 after one quarter of play and held a 29-point lead by halftime, allowing the Bulldogs to get their reserves plenty of playing time in the second half.

“They moved the ball the well and played unselfish,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said of his team. “Our defense didn’t give up many good looks and everybody stepped in and did a nice job.”

Monte was led by its trio of standout underclassmen. Sophomore forwards Lex Stanfield (17 points, 3 steals) and Jillie Dalan (16 pts., 11 reb., 3 stl.) and freshman point guard Tieander Olson (15 pts., 7 assists, 3 stl.) each scored in double figures to lead Monte to its 31st straight league victory.

“It’s a huge accomplishment for this group,” Mansfield said of his team’s unbeaten league season.”

Monte shot 24 of 60 from the field (40%) and outrebounded the Grizzlies 37-19.

Hoquiam was led by junior guard Katlyn Brodhead with five points.

The Grizzlies were held to 25 points or less in five of their past six games.

Montesano honored its lone senior, Liz York, on Senior Night. York, who has been sidelined all season after suffering a knee injury over the summer, was cheered as she took the court for a play early in the game.

“She’s been a part of the program for four years and as the only senior she was really a leader for them over the summer,” Mansfield said of York. “She’s been there everyday and has been a tremendous leader. The girls really look up to her and it was nice to get her recognized tonight.”

Montesano will enter the 1A District 4 Tournament as the 1A Evergreen League’s No. 1 seed while Hoquiam is the No. 4 seed when postseason play starts on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Willapa Valley closed out its regular season with a 44-36 loss to Mossyrock on Thursday at Mossyrock High School.

Valley (10-11, 6-4 1B Columbia Valley) stayed close through three-and-a-half quarters, but a surge from Mossyrock late in the fourth quarter turned out to be the difference.

Foul troubles and poor shooting plagued Valley, which went 9 for 39 from the field (23%) and had four players commit four fouls apiece.

Tylar Keeton led Valley with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Kylee Fluke (8 pts.), Lauren Matlock (7 pts., 11 reb., 5 ast.) and Addison Merkel (6 pts., 9 reb.) also filled up the stat sheet for Valley.

Mossyrock is a fast-moving team and we were able to hang with them for three-and-a-half quarters,” Valley head coach Dawn Keeton said. “The girls all played really hard. A couple of them were battling some sicknesses, trying to recover. They played through it and kept the offense moving at a higher tempo tonight.”

Mossyrock was led by eighth-grader Maci Rashoff, who scored 12 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, sparking Mossyrock’s victory.

Valley finished third in the 1B Columbia Valley League and will host Lake Quinault at 6 p.m. on Monday in a 1B District 4 Tournament game.
